Getting 1440x900 in ubuntu

I got a HP ZD8000 LapTop.

I cannot install the ATI Drivers as the screen goes white, however, in normal VESA mode, I can manage 1024x768 only.

Now, Im going through a few distros and right this minute, Im running 1440x900 and the display is quick and gorgeous, but Im using SUSE 10.0 and I just cannot get wireless working on it at all.

So, I can now see that the rez is possible and very nippy, so if I can get it to force it in Ubuntu, then Id be happy as larry.
