Getting 2 headphones receiving same output

As I read many people saying you need a Bluetooth splitter to use 2 headphones to watch a movie on your laptop, I saw some comments saying you could do it with only a software installed.

As you can pair a mouse and a headphone, I really don't see where the hardware is missing...

Does the soundcard play a role in that?

Do anyone know such a software?

P.S. If that is really of concern... My laptop's soundcard is a realtek ESS Hi-Fi 9018k2m and wireless AC Intel 8260 (may upgrade to 9260)

Could anyone confirm Virtual Audio Cable does it?

It seems possible using Virtual Repeater MME with headphones using dongles but not sure about the ones without dongle...?

Yeah I'm really trying to avoid additional hardware. There MUST be some "simpler" tweaks like the software I mentioned...
I really don't get what a splitter offer that a laptop doesn't have :D
