i;m fed up of people parking outside my dads house.

I have some drive gates, and he owns the house, so can I just knock down the wall and stick the gates in? I dont care about the ramp off the curb or anything, I dont intended to rip the garden plants up and remove the grass. I just want drive gates so I COULD park a car in my garden and more importantly no one can park outside the house.

but if i do want to rip up the curb and make a gentle slope to my "drive", do i need to notify the council? Would they mind me doing it my self? OR do i need a certified builder?

If you don't get a drop kerb, people will still be able to park in front of your dad's house, and on top of that your car will be stuck in the garden :/

I believe the council have to arrange the drop kerb, or you have to use approved builders, but not sure of exactly how it works. I suppose you'd need some form of planning permission too.

Having a drive way wont stop people from parking outside your house, least it dont here or anywhere else ive been, then what? your stuck with ** car in the drive and want to go smashing windscreens etc :p

yeah you have to pay council for drop curb, and they overcharge normally.

Althoguh i believe by law it would still only be illiegal for them to block you in, not block you out

General rule of thumb is you can change anything behind your garden wall (within reason) without any form of consent.

If you want to change your wall itself (make it higher, take it down etc) you will almost certainly require planning permission.

Best idea is to call your council's planning department and just ask them. They'll tell you what you can & can't do.

You have to apply to the council and they will drop the kerb. Once the kerb is dropped and officially access to your property anyone parking in front can be removed by the council. Same as blocking any kind of "access" with a vehicle.

You can not block anyone's access - this means in or out.

You can ask them to move their car - if they won't you're well within your rights to call to the police and ask them to remove the vehicle.

perfect so all i need is to drop the flags and get a space to shove a car/bike.

nice one :)

I cant stress enough you *HAVE* to get council permission. Otherwise you can technically be done with destruction of public property, work without a permit.... etc.

Once done however anyone blocking driveway access can be towed. That includes people who live there should a traffic warden or whoever walk passed.

oh so I must park in my drive? I cant block my own drive?

Oh you can I just saying what "could" occur. I am pretty much sure that unless you complain nothing will happen against anyone that parks in front of your drive. :p

Edit: I am planning on getting a drive on my new house and using the guaranteed parking spot on the road this will give me ;)

I was under the impression it's not illegal to park so as to prevent access to an off road drive, but it was to block access to the queen's highway - in other words someone can park in front of an empty driveway, but not a driveway with a car on it (that may wish access to the road).

At least the police tend not to take action unless it's blocking a car in.

when we got our drive done we just got permission of the council, they gave us an approval letter to drop the cerb and we was away, free of charge
