Hi al as per title really but what I want to know is there a self test function so I know it all works?.

I dont want to get it then find out some thing is not working right and as I dont really know my way around the operating system I just want like a one click tester like I had on me PDA etc.

All so is there any thing that I should look out for that is common faults with these?.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah I heard there better with a contract phone.

TBH though I will mainly be using it for GPS,Games,Text,Phone calls and internet ONLY AT WIFI spots like my house me parents house etc.

Is there not some other way to test the GPS and stuff works?.

Thanks again

EDIT

on me ARCHOS 5 IT there is a GPS diagnostic test is there one on the galaxy s1?

Honestly, the SGS1 GPS is just bad with and without the major patches, accuracy in testing is about 40M or so at the best of times. The problem was fixed by a re-design in the sgs2. It's really really unlikely to have failed, it's more than it's just a crap design that holds it back.

Disabling wifi just means it won't use skyhook, A-GPS is still beneficial over any data source to be honest.

A bunch of codes I stole from google (the first is really for network testing, don't use it unless you know what you're doing or you will break stuff)
*#*#4636#*#* for battery and other general setttings like GSM/CDMA
*#*#8255#*#* for Gtalk service monitor
*#*#7780#*#* for factory data reset
*#*#34971539#*#* for information about phone camera (be very careful hitting options here)
*#*#7594#*#* change the "Power" button action in your phone.
*#*#197328640#*#* service mode
*#197238640# service mode
*#0*# testing mode
*#06# view IMEI number
*#1234# display phones current firmware
*#*#1472365#*#* gps test
*#0011# network mode/cell info/power info hidden menu
*#*#0*#*#* screen test menu

Stealth edit - I can't make the GPS test work, not sure why not - code is going silent (aka removed from dialer but nothing is coming back).

Hi there thanks for all the input I will have a play when he turns up cant be any worse than the phone I have now and if the GPS really is crap I do have a satnav any ways but would be nice to have it all in one package.

EDIT

is there only one version of the S1 or is there newer/older versions?

I know they are classed as the i9000? is this the only model if there is more than one what is the best one and how do I check?.

Thanks

There's 1 international model that was sold everywhere except the good ol USA because they are special flowers and use different network designs. Don't worry about it, you'll be looking at the i9000 which is the only one you can use.

If you really really want to check: settings > about phone > model number = GT-i9000.

There's only one model, the i9000 but it could have been revised at any time.

BTW if you want to change to XEU csc before you start putting data on it, because then you can get newest Android version from Kies.

Dial *#272*imei# note that it will wipe that phone when you press install.

Lock on with A-GPS and/or skyhook/Google wifi location service is virtually the same as any handset (Samsung handsets by default use a asian location almanac server so it takes a few seconds longer but nothing major). Without data it will always be horrible first time starting / starting without using gps within the last 2 weeks or so, that's just how GPS works :(
