Hey,

Well I going to get another dog in the near future, I can't get a large dog as the house isn't big enough and I already have a 14 months old Cairn Terrier.

I really like Bassett Hounds and Beagles, can anyone give advice on either dogs? Healthy problems, training etc.. or other breed recommendations?

My other problem is my Cairn (Murphy) is a real terror when it comes to Socialising, I'm just worried I'll end up with 2 Crazy Dogs!

All advice greatly appreciated,

Thanks a lot,

Matt.

Id have to say sort the other dog out first before you go thinking about adding another.

agreed tbh. You'll probably end up adding to the problem not making it better.

However if you are determined to get another dog - If I was you, I'd ring up a reputable local rescue and speak to them. They'll be inundated shortly with puppies, young and old dogs and will be able to sort you out with a dog that is right for you. I would suggest not getting a puppy, and I would suggest taking your dog to meet it and introduce it before you even think about bringing it home. Again a good rescue will be able to help you with this.

Also try www.dogpages.co.uk - they are excellent and will give you good advice on your dog and how to socialise him. There are chat and advice sections as well as rehoming sections and I know several of the people on there in real life and they are real experts when it comes to behavioural issues.

Thanks very much for the replies!

I've been working with Murphy this morning, as we've been out and met a few friendly dog faces. Out of the 4 dogs, he only got violent with one.. a great dane

sounds like he's passive agressive - my dog is exactly the same - fine with smaller dogs but seems to 'go' for bigger dogs because she's actually scared of them so she tries to stand up to them which makes her look like she's going to go for them and inevitably causes a kick off  Hard work aren't they?

Beagles are lovely dogs, very gentle with kids, but they are headstrong and difficult to train! If you get one make sure the parents are pets/show not working dogs. Some people never let them off the lead as they have a tendency to disappear off chasing scent trails, which is what they are bred to do after all. They are generally healthy and hardy and don't cost to much to feed. I had mine for 13 years, the first few years she was a bit of a pain to say the least, but once she had calmed down she was the best dog ever! Still miss her, but I'm not sure if I would get another!

Bassett Hounds I cant help you on.

Beagles are lovely dogs, they dont grow much larger then a Springer Spaniel and are good at training. As far as i know they dont have any major health issues apart from with most dogs dont over feed and under exercise them. They are bred for hunting so once they get a sent unless trained properly they'll just fly off tracking it.

I would recommend you get either a Labrador (working breed) or a Springer Spaniel. They are 2 amazing breeds, very good with adults, young kids and other dogs. They are bred as hunting/companion dogs so they love human contact. Labs are very very easy to train as there so desperate to make you happy. Springers are wappy and lovely dogs, good to train and are also very human dependant.

These are my 2.
