Getting my own place - How much will bills be?

Thinking of giving up on living in college, and looking at renting a two bedroom place on the outskirts of Cambridge and trying to figure out how much I can afford.

Bills wise I'll be looking at:

Line rental + cheapo broadband
Water
Electricity
Gas

Could anyone give me a rough guess at how much that would be a month for a small two bedroomed house?

Not sure on anything but the phone and broadband which can be picked up for £30 a month which would also include TV as well.

Yeah the best I can see for broadband is bulldog which is 10.50 line rental + 9.75 for the cheapest package.

Someone was trying to tell me "Students don't have to pay council tax, and if they do they definately don't have too pay as much", I take it he was talking complete twaddle? (I am moving into rented accomodation next year so was wondering... would be nice if it WAS true).

If all house members are students, Council Tax is indeed nil.
 
Full time students don't have to pay council tax. You should be able to get a form from your Uni to give to your council to prove that you're in full time education.

That said, if you live with anyone who isn't a full time student then they'll be liable for their share of council tax, either a reduced amount for one person, or the full amount (2 or more non students).

I have a small 2 bedroom detached house, and mine are as follows:

BT £10.50 + Eclipse 8mbit ADSL £23 = £33.50pm
Water £60 per quarter = £20pm
Electricity £65 pq = £22pm
Gas i dont get here, but oil which is in place is about £10pm (and i lave my heating on all the time and waste loads of hot water)

Total is roughly around £100, but then i have £40 mobile phone on top, and obviously food is a couple of hundred per month too.
 
But it is illegal, and we don't condone illegal activities do we? ;)

Must buy a license next year... then we can stop ignoring people knocking on the door :p
 
I dont know of anyone who has had any bother from the TV licensing people, i'd just play that by ear and let them warn you a couple of times if at all. Buy one then but not before. Touch wood i havent heard anything yet, as havent any of my friends with their own places.

Not worth trying to get away from it if they do ask though, it'll only result in lots of hassle.
 
TV licence - £130 ish
Water - about £300/350 a year
Council Tax - depending on the band, prob £1000 a year
Gas - it goes up and down depending on seasons, i say, £125 per quarter average
Electricity - £150 per quarter

Thanks for all the help guys, really useful.

At the moment the place I'm looking at is £720 a month for rent, I don't have to pay council tax as I'm a full time student and so is my flat mate. So we'll probably be looking at £800 a month with bills I reckon, excluding TV license.

Now I have no idea how I shall pay almost £5000 in rent with my £1500 student loan (all I get now due to the NHS bursary scheme meaning I lose half my student loan to get my tuition fees paid).

How are your bills so high? My house is detatched and i am very wasteful (leave my network of pc's, big plasma in lounge, everything else) all on pretty much all the time, waste loads of hot water with my big bath tub, and they still only come to maybe £150pm including my mobile. :confused:

I'm including food, travel, car stuff et cetera...

...Plus a serious Magazine habit.

I reckon that seriously I spend about £850 in an average month...More if I'm feeling flush.

Gotcha, thats with everything ontop. I'm just trying to figure out rent + house bills at the moment, thinking of all of it will make me cry :(
