Getting the best out Of Broadband Help

Hi,

well after several problems with my new Broadband installation (UKFSN Office 45) and having read a few sites, I need an easy guide on how to imrove my BB speed. My current BT Voyager 100 ADSL USB Modem syncs normally around 3.6meg yet seems to be only getting around 1meg down and 384k (should be 884)

having spoken to UKFSN they have advised changing the modem for a router which I am going to do, this they said may result in a faster download speed as they think the modem is holding me back. Whether this is right or wrong I dont know however I need a router anyway :p

but having read a number of other sites etc I think my whole broadband set up may need looking at. TBH previously I was on 512k and thats what I got so I have pretty much the absolute basic set up.

i.e I have 4 phone sockets in the house, 2 downstairs one in the kitchen and one in the dining room (dining room does not have a phone attached) and the main socket.

The main socket has a two way splitter which is used as follows the first connnection there is a telephone line which is the extension line which is the telephone extension to the study where Iuse the BB. The second socket is used for the main downstairs phone. This is the only socket in the house that has a Microfilter attached. Yep thats right folks, one microfilter and its a old cheap and nasty one at that :p. But previously this all worked so I never nbothered or saw the point in buying any more :(

Having read around it is best to have a microfilter wherever theres a phone ? If this is the best case that would mean buying an additional microfilter which isnt a problem, however I have my BB connected directly to the extension socket upstairs, there is no phone here but would it also be best to have a microfilter here as well ?

I had a budget of around £50 for my router, but looking at the things i might need to do this can increase.

Are there other things i need to do / consider ? would the cheap microfilters be ok or do I need professional ones etc etc.

any help would be greatly appresiated.

I replaced the faceplate of my master socket with one of these. That way the phone and broadband is split from source so need to micro filters for every socket.

Posting competitor links = bad

so if i got one of them, simply plug the study telephone extension into the ADSL line and bam direct connection to the ADSL ? and this would negate the need for microfilters ?

Pretty much read this for a guide on what to do.

hmm seems the best option then, looking nowt getting one of these plus my new router currently looking at the OcUK ones or the ZyXEL Prestige 660H

not sure which would be best tbh.

I've only ever used Draytek, Billion and Netgear modems. I've found Netgear to be terrible and the other two to be excellent but both are outside of your budget.

EDIT: I didn't realise OC were stocking Billions now - the 5200 should suit you fine. If you want wireless Billion do a 5200G (wireless G) for a few pounds more.

I basically just want one thats easy to use, easy to set up and reliable.
In that case stay away from the ZyXEL 660H as it's definitely not easy to set up. The Netgear DG834 range has a deserved reputation for being easy to set up and working well - Shine's experience is distinctely atypical. You could also consider Linksys. I've never come across the Billion products before so can't comment on them. Draytek is the best but is priced accordingly - two or three times the price of the others mentioned here.

You might want to quickly remove that link - I was suspended last week for posting exactly the same link! didn't get a warning or anything...

I strongly suggest you follow this guide:
http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php?type=html

I just recommended that to a guy on ADSLGuide, who was syncing at 3MB, hes now getting 6.4MB!
It also increased my sync from 7456kbps to 8128kbps.

Get good quality filters on each of you're phone sockets that are in use, or use the XTE-2005 NTE faceplate recommended above.

A new router might help, but I would try the above first.

Looks like someone beat me to it. :D

It never occurred to me that they would be classed as competitors. :o

ok guys we have lift off.

tried step three ish on that list Zildjian showed me. i first off trie the microfilter sraight into the test socket with the extension to the study into that. It wouldnt sync at all.

So I Tried the extension cable straight into the test socket, this synced at a unbelievable 7.1mpbs. I ran BT speedtester and the test result was 800k upload and 7.1meg dload which is way more than i have ever got before.

I couldnt stay like this though as it meant no phones in the house :p so I plugged the two way into the test socket, top socket to BB bottom with microfilter and to my phones. Synced up and at 6.4 MPBS.

BT Test Result as follows

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 1500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 832 kbps(UP-STREAM) 6432 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1375 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

So still synching way higher than ever before which was around 3.3mpbs and 384k upload.

The 2 things that this has brought to my attention are

1: Does this mean my Microfilters borked as it didnt work

2: Could my actual Faceplate be borked ? as that is really all that has changed ?

ok just plugged the faceplate back in and wired it all up as normal, synched at 7.0 MPBS ? wonder if i was getting a dodgy connection with the face plate previously ?

anyway have checked the stats for my line

local / remote attenuation 16.0 / 12.0 dB
SNR Margin 16.5 DB

these are way better than what I had previously on 512k which from this thread

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17727654

were

Local / Remote Attenuation 37.5 / 31.5 dB
SNR Margin 30.0

this seems to be way better. so Im a bit stumped as whether its worth doing anything now ? other than have them reset my IP Profile ?

sorry guys update 3 ;p

Found the problem. It the two way. Basically I couldnt even get the phone to work in the second socket whcih is the one i normally have my BB in, i just couldnt get a dial tone with or without the microfilter. So in essence i think the second socket is knackered as I plugged my Bb in and boom synched at 3.3mpbs this cannot be a coincedence can it ?

Ive moved the phone into another room and now have my Study extension connected to the top socket and have just connected at 7.3mpbs. so I think i have found the problem :p

now I just need to speak to my ISP and let them know.

That is great :D
Have you checked to see which wires are connected in you're phone sockets?
Only 2 and 5 need to be connected, remove any others.

suprisingly didnt seem like any where connected to the face plate at all ? i could literally take it straight off ?
