Getting the most out of speakers / sound card?

With my latest computer build I upgraded both my speakers (Logitech Z-5500) and sound card (Auzentech X-Plosion).

I don't have a massive amount of knowledge about speakers/sound cards and have a few questions about how to get the most out of them.

The main one is whether I should be looking to switch to using the digital slots to connect the speakers to the soundcard (the soundcard came with a toslink cable - unfortunately I don't have it to hand so I was wondering how important it was that I get hold of it). So far I've just used the analogue cables for input and the sound is fine but doesn't feel like a massive step up from my few year old Altec Lansing speakers. Would there be a difference in quality if a switch were made (listening wise it's primarily .mp3's and a few DVD movies and games).

Both the speakers and the sound card have various versions of DTS and Dolby Digital products which they claim to be compatable with. Are these only utilised when operating digitally or will they be used when the analogue connectors are used.

I haven't attached the small cable that runs from the DVD Rom drive to the sound card inside the computer case. Is this important (and would it improve sound during DVD playback)?
