Dandle! Whats all this about then? You told me winter tyres were just plain better in winter :(

Nice little piece in topgear mag this month about the difference on a 530D on winter tyres to summer. The reviewer was staggered with how much better the winter tyres were. :D

In what conditions though? As someone who lived for 5 years in a place (Munich, Germany) where winter tyres were mandatory and definitely needed I haven't thought they are a good idea over here, even with the extreme winters we've had over the past 3 years. Despite it being the worst December for 100 years or something around here I was only unable to take the car out once, and in fact even if I had winter tyres I wouldn't have taken it out that day due to the conditions and gridlock around here.

The review must have been in snow, in which case winter tyres are much better but we have about 2 days of it down south and you wouldn't get anywhere anyway due to everyone else on summer tyres.

As we were chatting about in the pub. The winter tyres your used in Germany 10yrs ago could have been fairly old designs even back. With them not needing replacing probably for 5 or 6 yrs puts the potential tyre your used to at 10-15yr old designs. There are people who work for Conti who run winters all year round, they get free tyres whenever they are needed and can have both winters and summers for free. I think they have probably moved on from what you are used to, possible a different tyre is marketed over there to suit those conditions more as well.
