is this a good board or can you get better for the same sort of money?

you could get this as a worthy alternative, costs a little bit more but think you would find a little more bang for you buck.
It really just depends on what you want the board to do?
The UD3R is a great board, I have used/overclocked one myself and it is a lovely piece of kit. It should happily take an i7 920 D0 tp 4GHz with little hassle and has all the fun features like x16x16 PCIE lanes and triple channel memory that make X58 such a great platform.
The i9 (i7 980X) is s1366, just like the other i7s and it should work fine with this board - just needs a BIOS update.
Buying now you'll get a revision 1.6 or 1.7 board.all ordered. went to gigabytes site and they have 3 revisions 1.0, 1.6 and 1.7. i know it will probably be written on the board when it arrives but a)is there much difference in the revisions or are they mainly bios updates and b) am i more than likely going to get the 1.7 unless its really old stock?

There is no difference between these apart from the rev.1.7 having 'European Union EuP (Energy-using Products)' certification.
There is however an EX58A-UD3R board on its way (already on sale in the USA) which adds a few (mostly entirely pointless at present) features:
