Girl requires help!

you lot are just thick.

the current psu she has is sufficient, it has 19.5a on the 12v rail. a 7900gt will have no problems working in that rig.

I have a Seasonic as it happens, they're great for most people, 1900 in Crossfire with 6 case fans a dvd, floppy and 2 hard drives in raid 0 is too much for mine.

A very secure purchase is the FSP 700w, it'll run most anything you throw it's way. There's also a new Silverstone St75 (750w) supply. These 2 are overkill supplies (I won't mention mine again)

The there's the 600w range which includes Tagan, OCZ and a model from Silverstone and also Seasonic.

Both of the above product lines are reasonably future proof. If your other half is gonna spend big next year then he can still use the psu.

Or there's a few 480w and 580w supplies which are up to the task (gr1mey mentioned one) of single cards and in some cases SLI too.

Raja

Seven317 reading between the lines you do not want to waste too much money hence the only gfx card upgrade etc etc.

That being the case go for either a PCI-E Nvidia7600/6800 or ATI X1600 any of those 3 are a reasonable step up from the 6200. Which of the models you choose will not make a huge difference anyway as your current rig will bottleneck a little unless you completely upgrade all of it. You should not need to buy a new PSU either just the gfx card.

My personal choice would be Nvidia as they have better driver support than ATI. Just choose a 7600 for less than £100 and that should be fine plus it can still be re-used as a media PC when you have your new Vista PC.

^

like I said b4, just get an 7900GT 256MB, if your current PSU cannot (unlikely) handle it then get a new unit, why not try to see if it works first?

@raja: she got a mATX case and from the picture, the PSU is very close to the DVD/CD drive already, and 600/700W unit or modular might not fit in there

Agreed, I was gonna say the exact same thing but instead I'll just agree. FSP are a good make, and it's a fairly recent pc/psu so the current power supply should handle a 7900GT quite well. I think the 7900gt has low power requirements (compared to 7800gt/gtx) at stock anyway due to the lower chip voltage?

Going with a 400/500w+ psu just to upgrade the video card is in my opinion, pointless. The 300w limitation is to cover cheapo power supplies that say they're 300/400w but can barely cope with 250w (for example), a proper 350w like that one will handle just about any high end card at the moment I think.

Have you ever considered not being so nasty to people because they are not as 'clever' as you? I've seen posts recently in which you could have quite easily worded to be a little more diplomatic and kind to get your point over, instead you prefer to insult people for making a mistake, no-one's perfect, there was no need to call everyone thick.

what's the tdp of that processor? If it draws 10 amps from the 12v line that leaves 9.5a for everything else incl gpu.

how much does a 7900 pull under full load?

K as far as psu goes I was thinking 9800pro had a 350w as min, and nowadays power req are up, I believed 500w was min (but have heard of 400w+ working). I had a figure of 30a on 12v rail but maybe that was a little off.

In any case I dont think anything less than a 7900gt or x1800xt is "the best".

i have a x1800xt, amd64 3000@2/7, 3 HD's etc etc etc on a 400W PSU running fine. i think the 350w will be ok ...

get the x1800xt for sure ;) cant believe how much better it is then my 6600gt

Got any links to back that up- Im afraid Im not just going to take your word for it.

i'd just go with a 7900GT and try it. I bet it will work. My X850XT works fine with an Antec 300W jobby, along with an overclocked Opteron. :)

Seriously my comments were helpful, I think I'm entitled to a bit of rofl'ry now and again. Damn you post deleters!

Things like "MARRY ME", I'd love to have a gf like that - you wouldn't have to think about upgrading ever again. Due to our quick replies she said "Wow you guys are fast!" so I replied "Only on here honey ;) "

Damnit I bet this'll be deleted :o

This is the gfx card forum. Strictly no fun. :)

:( I want women's!

Seriously though, any PSU above 500w should do you, unless you get a 1900xt as they drink power. Oh and avoid Q-Tec like the plague.

S'ok Zefan! I've read it!

7900GT would be great if it works

Can you guys give me some info on connecting the card to the PSU? not needed to do that before.
