Girlfriend doesn't want me to work as a doorman?

I was going to add the safety aspect too.

When I had a bar job some years back, I knew the Door Supervisor well. It doesn't matter how tough you are, you will take some injuries, either through splitting up people fighting or somebody getting you by surprise. His worst was that somebody had knocked a couple of teeth out, he now wears a kind of brace with fake teeth to hide the gaps.

I can understand her being worried about girls though, I had the same concerns from my girlfriend at the time working behind the bar. You will get propositioned by someone, so it's what you do about it that's the issue.

Does it matter how capable you are if you are out numbered 4-1 or someone comes behind you with a knife?
A doorman should never be in that situation, two's up minimum at all times, backs against walls and what doorman would not be wearing stab proof clothing? esp in scotland! With others only a radio call away. Except when doing some slapper in the toilets :p

Anyone is vulnerable to that kind of thing
And some are more capable than others.

Haha... funnily and strangely enough, I do all of those and she doesn't bat an eye lid. This for some reason has freaked her. She used to work in a bar and apparently "seen things"

done things more like..

my stepson works in a bar and the only doorman stories we ever hear are about them beating people up/kicking people out

You are living in a fantasy world if you think this is how all doors are run and the OP is guarenteed to be in such a place. It also matters not how "capable" someone is when it comes to being worried about them in that sitatuion, the fact that you think that there are people so "capable" out there that it is unjustifiable worrying about them further points to you having no idea what you are taking about.

I'm saying we have no idea how capable he is. Maybe you have never met men who are highly capable in these types of situations? As it stands, we have no idea. I think you are living in a fantasy world if you do not think some folk are more capable than others.

I'm not saying 'all' doors are run like that, but I would not be working for an outfit that did not put their safety first, that would be unbelievably stupid.

listen to your G/F its a rotten way to make a living.

worked the doors up here a few years ago and I could tell you some horror stories.

BUT if your going to do it take the advice above. go through a decent training provider and as mentioned learn some basic self defence skills. and remember never be cocky. Just because your wearing a vest and know how to look after yourself doesnt mean you wont get hurt. This daydream that door stewards are always team handed is untrue. I've found myself single manning on occasions and its not a pleasant experience when something kicks off. Its not all about nightclubs and scantily clad women though, try having some drunken 6 1/2 foot hairy bloke touching you up. Pick the company you work for carefully, theres a lot of cowboy operators out there believe me i've worked for a few of them. Just remember you WILL get hurt and you will have trouble at some point. but if your careful and sensible you can minimise the risks to yourself and if you've got the gift of the gab you can talk down a lot of situations before they start.
I've seen stewards stabbed glassed attacked with nailfiles high heels any anything and everything in between. a lot of situations can be stopped before they start but a lot of that is down to common sense and experience, knowing what to look for and snuffing flashpoints out early.

If you have any other questions of want some advice then e-mail in trust

Indeed, your safty was not her primary concern which does indicate a few problems. But like others have mentioned seek a different job.

Saw a colleague get hit in the face with a artificial male appendage once....

Forgot to mention that one psycho bit me good and hard on the neck once as she went into the club, drew blood and caused severe bruising that left me getting all kinds of tests done and having to take super strong anti-bio-tic's just in case....

One gent I worked with got spat in the face one night and ended up in a 3 month coma
