girlfriend wants a small, cheap, reliable car -options?

i'm no expert when it comes to cars, so i figured i'd ask here

i was thinking something like a micra or a corsa, will def be getting a 2nd hand one, budget around 700-1600 ish

fuel efficiency + safety > speed

I agree with my esteemed colleagues.

In fact there is a boy racer at work who's Mrs drives a Micra 16v and he grabs it off her whenever he can because it's quite fun to drive.

The K11 shape (the oen that ran through most of the 90s through until early 2000s) is a good little runner.

A couple of big things to look out for (rusty front cross member and dodgy TB, both big bills) but otherwise goo dcars.

1.0 16v is actually a nice enough drive, lacks grunt when you need it but day to day stuff is fine, the gear change is lovely too.

My other half has one and it's a laugh, slides sooo easily And it's used pretty extensively, has done a 50 mile commute everyday for the last 2 years!

would definitely recommend a k11 1.0 16v, my mate has one and it is bulletproof, and the amount of abuse it takes is amazing!! parts are cheap, insurance is cheap, its economical, and im sure your bird will think its "nippy" cannot fault the thing really, does its job perfectly.
