Give me some advice here - My move to PCI-E ** Wife no longer involved **

I find myself forced into an upgrade to a PCI-E gfx card.

I am looking around £150 - which is my best option ?

Was thinking of this

PowerColor ATI Radeon X850 XT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-037-PC) £152

or should I go for something else ?

Im upgrading from a 128MB Radeon 9800 Pro. (AGP)

7600GT all the way. Faster and cheaper too. The Leadtek and XFX versions are only £141 on OCUK, even cheaper elsewhere if you look around.

What sort of noise levels can I expect from these - they seem to have some pretty hefty fans on them.

Also, have Nvidia sorted their slowdown problems when it comes to AA and AF ?

I know Im sounding like an ATI fanboy, but the last NVidia card I owned was back in the days of GF4 Ti4600.

My trusty 9800 Pro has performed well, but its time to move on.

Interesting predicament. In that range the ATI card might actually be quicker (though not by much and not in all games), but won't support SM3.0.

If you can get an X1800GTO or XL in that range that would be a better option. I think either one is quicker than the 7600gt or the X850. (just checked X1800GTO in £170, the XL will be more if you can find one).

The 7600gt is really decent though for it's price and might be a viable SLi option if you go down that route. I understand they also overclock well and have a volt mod option like the 7900gts. The X850s are very much the best of yesterdays cards and don't have all the technology that the newer cards do (HDR and SM3.0) but it might be quicker in most games (you just won't be able to access all the eye candy extras).

OK, now Im at work and away from the wife's prying eyes - heres the real deal.

I can goto £225 inc vat - rather than the £150 previously posted.

So, which PCI-E card for £225 inc VAT will give me the best performance.

Im open to all suggestions, need to order this today before I go home.

7900GT over the X1800XT ?

7900's are still pricey though - I think Im risking my pods going an extra £75 to what she thinks Im spending.

You can get a X1800XT for about £200 and they are a great card at stock. The 512 versions are a bit more but better still.

The 7900gts are great, but you have to be prepared to overclock them to make them better value for money than the X1800XTs.
