Going to a christening tomorrow and my wife and I are going to be the godparents.

Not the kind of thing you can say 'no' to when you're asked by a long time friend, however I don't believe in god, nor have I ever been baptised/christened/whatever, as both my parents are atheists as well.

Aside from bursting into flame from the lord's wrath when I enter the church, am I going to hit any embarrassing moments when the vicar has a chat?

Just nod your head and go along with it. I'd be more worried about the responsibility of looking after that child rather than the religious background behind it. It's a big deal when you agree to become a godparent, and not for religious reasons. Just look past all that.

Erm you may want to check. I'm pretty sure theres a "Do you beliebe in god, reject satan and all his works" question / speech which your meant to say yes to. So either ask about it and explain or just say yes and start off as a god parent the right way :) - lieing to help them out.

Just go along with the questions which you will all answer together. I'm sure lots of godparents don't actually believe. Just make sure your role is good in that you will 'look out' for the kiddy and give advice if possible.

Besides, you get a nice candle at the end, courtesy of HIM. ;)

What exactly does being a godparent entail nowadays? Isn't it just a meaningless title?

Nope im a godmother, and it means you promise the parents of the children that if anything happened to them (the parents) you would look after the children. I probably wouldnt have to do that in my case because there are grandparents around who would step in, but I would if there was no other option.
I see mine once a week, and I absolutely love being called "Auntie" :)

being a godparent has little to do with religion really. All it means is that you're there for the child if he/she needs you.

I shouldn't worry about it... If the church is happy to dunk anyone whose parents ask, then they'll have had oodles of people who have no idea what they're doing come through their doors.

I love how "atheist" is a new buzz word for "cba" or agnostic.

It all depends on semantics so I wont belittle you, but this statement quite frankly makes you look like a fool.

"Define God." :D

If you've not been christened then you can't be God parents.

The vicar will probably assume you're Christened, but if he requires proof, then your role as a God Parent will be refused.

Bishop Facks: So, Father. Do you ever have any doubts about the religious life? Is your faith ever tested? Anything you would be worried about? Any doubts you've been having about any aspects of belief? Anything like that?
Father Dougal: Well, you know the way God made us all, right? And he's looking down at us from heaven and everything?
Bishop Facks: Uh-huh.
[nods]
Father Dougal: And then his son came down and saved everyone and all that?
Bishop Facks: Yes.
Father Dougal: And when we die we're all going to go to heaven?
Bishop Facks: Yes. What about it?
Father Dougal: Well, that's the bit I have trouble with.

Father Dougal: I don't believe in organized religion

Father Dougal: Hello Len.
Bishop Brennan: Don't call me Len, you little *****. I'm a bishop!
Father Dougal: Oh right. Well done.

There are no legal obligations to being a godparent, though from the point of view of Christianity you are responsible for ensuring that the kid is brought up a good christian.

What a daft thing to say.

Atheist

- noun

A person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings.

It's not a buzz word, it's the correct term for someone who doesn't believe that there is a god.

Anyway, that stupid post aside, thanks for the comments - day went without a hitch and it was great. Nice church and good service (Anglican). Ok, so I had to tell some teensie white lies by stating that I believed in god and renounced all evil, but I had my fingers crossed, so it doesn't count. ;)

While the historical role of godparents may have been to look after the kids should anything happen to the parents, that isn't true today - I've no legal claim over them. The parents would need to put something in their will about fostering etc.

Still - means we get to buy birthday pressies etc (which we already did).
