My mum has been using a Samsung NC10 Netbook for years.

After realising that it hardly get's used out of home i've opted to buy her a new laptop. It must be pretty miserable only being able to use a Netbook.

Anyway the laptop will be used for:

- Web browsing 95% of the time
- Movies 5% of the time.
- NO GAMING

I'm happy to spend around £500 but I have no idea what's hot when it comes to laptops. Can you recommend a good model that I should look into?

I would desire:

- At least 4GB ram
- 1080p capability
- Sleek, good looking.

I saw this one which works out to be about £536 > http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/smallfish_info.php?products_id=47542

They have a selection of 4 here : http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/index.php

640GB HD, i5, 4Gb Ram, 1080p, etc.

So what models are pretty good? Are Asus good?

Your usage requirements put no real limitations on anything, so just about ANY laptop you like the look of will, do providing the specs are there. Why the need for so much space if it's just web browsing etc?

I'd be highly tempted to get an ipad3, will do everything you need, looks sleek, and I'd bet your mum would get more use out of it, with some of the apps etc, than a generic laptop.

The disk drive isn't really an expensive part so not too concerned if it is over the top.

Then again you are correct in that perhaps my whole selection is OTT and unecessary. I just get the feel that the more expensive laptops are just better made and feel better to use.

IPAD is a no-go. I can barely use itunes let alone unleash it on my mum. It's also a lot harder to use the net with....
