Another friend has employed me to build their new computer. He has gone for the £500 price range but I think with careful choosing we can nudge it down by £100, so 20% price reduction for how much performance reduction? Asking the good people here for some suggestions.

I will start with the last rig I built, under a week ago:

cpu: q9550 (very bad batch VID  of 1.3! not buying one again to OC) - £170
mobo: DFI LanpartyDK T2RS Plus - £62, very happy with this board
psu: ocz modxtreme 600W, very good - 8pin mobo connector was almost too short! £68
500GB samsung spinpoint f3 - very nice hdd £40
case: nzxt m59, brilliant piece of kit but we dont all want the same case lol. £44
cpu fan: ac freezer 7 pro version 2 - brilliant for the price. £19
gpu: 7900gs for now till new nvidia cards are out
ram: 2x2GB corsair xms2 twinx pc2-8500 £ 72 (ouch )

anyway, the whole system was £480 thereabouts which is on the spot money wise. But for the good of my building experience I want to move into something newer so I am looking at these i3 and i5 options but the ddr3 ram pushes the price up. Now, I am aware the ram speed is of lesser importance, so I can opt for a lower speed one but I still want to do some cpu overclocking so does that mean budget ram probably won't cut it? Unless there is a set of ram that has been known for being better than its price bracket suggests - and thats the kind of thing I like to hear about and why I am posting

I just want to know a lot about the area before I go ahead, got until monday at 5pm or whenever to buy, so the kit arrives on tuesday (most likely).

I'll either edit this or reply once I have made some initial component selections. Oh and I am not limiting all the parts to ocuk, dont link me or anything but mention the model name if you have suggestions and I will sneak off and look for it :D want to get the bulk of it from ocuk though as that tends to be the most reliable and the cheapest right now :D though not for monitors in my case, grrr
