Going to pollute the world a lot more.. :)

Is your budget north of £10k? If not surely a nice prefacelift would be a better buy than a scabby facelift. Prefacelits are cheap because they are old, post facelifts are cheap because they are at the bottom of the facelift market.

Naa it's not north of 10k, you may have a point but I wouldn't buy a scabby(bodywork) example anyway.
I don't care so much if it has a few issues with it's underpinnings, I can fix these over time. Its also a good opportunity to knock the price down if the car does have a few niggles like that.

Hate tatty "looking" cars though

I think you are better off with a 2002/2003 car than a cheap facelift.

You could always facelift it yourself anyway not much changed that I'd imagine you'd have an issue getting sorted.

The 30 bhp, better efficiency and a different gearbox would be. :D

But as always, you are probably right

No, otherwise I'd have bought a Rangerover. :D

That's actually one of the reasons I DIDN'T get a decent rangerover. I have a past of off-roading and as sure as day follows night I would have taken the thing off road and wrecked it. :o

My thoughts exactly! lol:eek:

As for the X5, its a 5 series on stilts, why bother? the 5 is the better car all round imo.

Whats the point of a big fat 4x4 that can't do the 4x4 thing?

I will make a thread tomorrow, Let me say boy it has been worth doing this conversion, I put a 6 speed manual in it and in the wet it will spin into 5th! I have never had a car that is so much fun to drive. And it sounds great. But I will post a thread with a few pics tomorrow.

I can clearly see the appeal of an X5 over a fast saloon, you sit nice n high which gives a different feeling when driving ( I can see the appeal in both sitting nice n high, or sitting very close to the road) and in speedbump land an X5 is better than a 5 series. Even brand new 5 series scrape across some bumps around here... More ground clearance is nice to have these days.

Most of the cars we have in for 4 wheel alignment are bmw x5's and x6's, they eat tyres, x6's can go through a set every 4000 miles.

The range rover would be a better choice ihmo.

I am a wheel alignment specialist as well :)
(I've heard they eat tyres also)
So no bother there. :D

Definitely looking forward to the thread on the conversion though!

I might buy a "cheaper" Rangerover for off-roading at a later date. I wouldn't entertain one as just my "nice vehicle" due to the above statement about taking it off road and the fact they suffer with so many "common" issues. Mostly, expensive to fix ones.

Can't wait, what an epic project.

OMG. How do things like this happen!!
An old mate I used to go to Nurburgring with rocked up at work and we were chatting.
I mentioned wanting an X5 and he said you'd better take a look outside!!!!
55 (ish)(private) plate carbon black 4.6is
Fully loaded, Connolly leather, etcetc.
A clay pigeon has marked the bonnet (tiny) and there is a tiny scuff on one corner of the rear bumper. That's all I could find wrong with it!
Of course I was drooling a bit thinking out of my price bracket...
Then he mentioned he'd been offered 5.5k part ex.
KER CHING.
Going to look over paperwork and what not this/ next week!

WOOP!

The very, very last of the 4.6is models were almost all on an 05 plate and even then those are rare to come across so if it's a 55 reg car it would be fairly unusual. Although the 4.8is started appearing in April 2004, there were still a few of the earlier 4.6 ones still kicking around brand new then and a little later.

What miles is this one carrying?. Is it leggy?.

He said it was around a 55 plate, hence the "ish" He's had his private plate on it for a number of years so neither of us could remember it's original reg.
Didn't have time to look under the bonnet, I just looked at the paintwork and opened the drivers door :D
He said it had an advisory on the last MOT for bushes in the rear suspension (woop de do :D) and whatever was needed during his ownership, it has had (and not on the cheap)
I'll know more when I've actually looked at it properly.
:D:D:D

Oh, high mileage 120k (worked in London a lot so a lot of commuting from Gloucestershire.)

Was it a facelift?

Trivia: The 4.6iS and 4.8iS X5's have the instrument cluster from the E39 M5 complete with illuminated variable redline.
