Going to rent a car in the USA, any tips on Insurance?

I am in Orange, Ca at the moment and need to rent a car for 2 weeks. The car rental is only £100 per week however they want $9 a day for the insurance on the car + another $12 per day for liability cover.

Is there any cheaper way around this?
 
Seems a bit steep -
If your under 25 there is usually an extra charge but not that much ($10 a day maybe?)
Try shopping around if you havent already
 
Yes there is a way round it.. Dont pay it! Only problem is that if you crash the car you are liable to pay for it. Check your credit cards too as some offer free insurance when hiring abroad... Or even if you are out there visiting friends give them the cash and get them to hire it on thier credit card as most cover you for liability and accident waivier...

BTW a bit of advice... Next time book it waaaaay in advanced and you get silly deals... ;)
 
If memory serves in the states it's often the case that you do need both insurance types, one covers physical damage to the car etc, the other covers you if you are sued after an accident (injuries etc).
 
4.50 a day. doesnt sound bad.

check for under 25's as well.

we went out there to play a few shows. needed unlimited mileage (as we went up and down *** east coast)

we had to pay another 100quid over the 8 day period to have me as a driver.
just the way it works.

think in total we had to pay 500quid for a huge SUV + 2 drivers, + under 25yrs old for 8 days.
 
The top level of American Express travel insurance includes fully comp hire car cover (or at least it did a couple of years ago). The downside is that it costs ~£250...
