Nice noise. Grunty but not desperately quick and pretty poor MPG.

If you are happy with wallowy handling and you get one for a good price, then not a bad car, but would have to be a bargain IMO.

Can't comment on the Golf, but I can on the engine.

Early V5's were 150bhp, late 2001 onwards were 170bhp. Great noise and much smoother than a 4 cylinder. I manage an average 34mpg and I enjoy its performance. Mine is in a Seat though, but the engine is great. It is chain driven and mine has been utterly reliable, despite its 190k mileage.

Are you limited to just the Golf?
A Toledo V5 is more likely to be in better condition and have much better spec..

Horrible looking things and not a hatch.
I could pick many alternatives myself, at the moment I'm interested in info for the golf though :)

why limit yourself to the v5? both the v6 and 1.8T are available and if your a bit perverse a 1.9 tdi :)

plenty of other good engines fitted in the range, the v5 whilst a good lump and pretty reliable its nothing special

why are you so set on this engine ?

surely if you ask if its any good, people are going to offer advice on whether other engines are better or not ?

as above but if your hell bent on buying a v5 beware their not without their problems

they eat mafs
watch out for chain slap its a hellishly expensive thing to put right
they like to eat coil packs and temp senders quite frequently too

at least your looking at the right version(170bhp 20v as opposed to the earlier 10v version)

might be worth signing up somewhere like golfv5.co.uk or .com cant remember which it is, for some more specialist advice on the lump but other than that its just a mk4 golf which you cant really go wrong with just check the usual accident damage/bushes on the golfs as they like to eat them and water ingress which is a major issue on all mk4 platforms

drinks like a v6, slower than a mapped 1.8

indeed also slower than a non mapped 1.8t 150 ;)

for the same money i'd be looking for either a tweaked 1.8T running 200 bhp or a nice v6 4motion running 200bhp and 4wd

that said i can understand the appeal of the v5, its quirky has a very unique sound and its a nice compromise if you really dont like the idea of a 4wd car :)

well given that you are ignoring half the advice given in this thread

exactly what are you asking for ? if we're not allowed to make comparisons with other engines.

Pointless thread is pointless.

I've not ignored any advice, those that have talked about what the subject is have not been ignored.
I'm not asking for a 'spec me' thread, I am asking about a specific model here because normally it is a hive of information without fanboyism (which is what i would get on a v5 forum).
I don't need to know about alternatives otherwise i would have asked about golfs more generically.
