Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Aaaaahh.....i put the original 250gb in replace of the dvd drive, change the boot order in the bios so it boots from that and not the array, and i get BOOTMGR is missing. ????
So, changed the sata controller from RAID to AHCI same diff.
So, changed it from AHCI to IDE and now it boots from the array again.

Any ideas anyone?

Right, i've had to make a decision.
I've flattened the array AND the original OS on the 250gb drive, created 2 new arrays,
1 x 250gb (raid0) = OS
3 x 1tb (raid5) = data (i can use the 4th as a replacment if one fails, 2tb is easily enoough for me anyway).

installing OS now.......

Guys,

I'm jumping on the bandwagon and getting one of these, since the drive cage uses a SAS backpane. Which RAID cards would work in this and be supported by ESXi? Would a SAS 6/iR card work? Can't tell whether it has mini-SAS or a big SAS connector...

You can't do RAID 5 with anything less than 3 disks! :)

Do you mean RAID 1??

Has anyone used the OcUK Value 8GB Kit with their microserver?

It's only £23.99 on TWO.

Interested as well.

Just installed and booted, confirmed as working.

Now I have enough memory to try to set up what I intend to do with this server, if it's possible!

1.) Have Esxi running from int. usb.
2.) Have a VM running freenas, with 3 virtual drives making a raid5/zfs array.
3.) Have a VM with Vortexbox, which uses the freenas array as it's storage drive.
4.) Have a VM running Win 2k8r2 for training purposes.
5.) Have a VM running Win 7 for training purposes.

Only problem is my lack of knowledge with Esxi, Freenas and Vortexbox... Guess the googleweb will answer all in it's infinite wisdom.

I'm hoping that I can use this 1 box for ripping and storing audio for my squeezeboxes, finally getting around to doing my MCITP without them interfering with each other.

I could dismiss the vortexbox and freenas setup and just use a win 2k8 server, but I want to play a little and hopefully pick up on some linux. Just waiting on some drives I've bought, so I can play.

Tony.

Does anyone know whether installing a raid controller actually disables the esata port at the back?
I spent all bleeding day copying over 500gb of data onto an esata device, only for it NOT to show up at all on the N36L. So i'm gonna have to do it all again with a USB drive now.
GGRRrrrrrrrr !!!!

Were you trying to hotplug the eSATA? I seem to remember I had to boot the machine with the eSATA device already attached for it to be recognised.

I regularly connect and disconnect a 4 bay esata enclosure to the standard esata port on the Microserver and its always seen without any reboot.
Works just fine.

Standard firmware or hacked? The standard firmware always used to run the eSATA port in IDE mode (no hotplug). The hacked firmware would allow the eSATA to run in ACHI mode which does support hotplug.

I recently fitted my SSD into one of the normal 3.5" drive bays.

The 3.5>2.5 adaptor you get with Intel X-25M does not work (It lines up the Sata Connectors in the drive cage wrong). The OCZ adaptor does not work (It mis aligns SATA connectors by 3-4mm).

In the end I bought an Icy Dock MB882SP-1S-2B 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch SATA HDD/SSD Converter - Black and this fits perfectly.
