I've just had a quick look at these - is the cashback deal no longer available?

No idea just yet.

I've mixed feelings on what I want from it - test bench to learn about VM's or a nice media storage with the capability to backup my iMac and pull down newsgroup files.

Need to have a read back over other peoples configs.

I have 2 of these 2TBs and 1 x 1TB of these hdds

How do you find the performance?

I'm not sure I can stomach spending £300 on 3x2tb. It's really only a toy - I think I'll settle for 2x2tb in Raid 0.

I'm not too worried about redundancy at the moment.

Samsung Spinpoints seem to work the best over a wide range of OS's, plus they are a little cheaper.

I wouldn't be surprised if this cashback deal ran and ran (like it already has done). At £149 for an entry level server they must be mopping up the low end of the market.....

Is there a way to make it automatically turn back on once power is restored?

Yep, somewhere in the BIOS (Power Management, or the obvious section) is an option along the lines of "Restore Power on AC Loss" with options Off, On, and Last State.

Off - machine will remain off after a power cut (and power returns)
On - machine will turn back on as soon as power returns
Last state - if machine was off when the power cut, it will stay off; if it was on, it will power up when power returns

So, you're connected to a UPS (right?). Presumably, you're using UPS software (or native battery handling) to shut down the machine. In that case, set the option to "On" and, even if the machine is gracefully shut down (as opposed to just losing power), it should come back when the UPS returns power to its outlets (when, or some time after, mains power returns).
