Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Or, can I run a Linux based system with XBMC + pump Xen ontop of that, for my little linux servers, e.g. freenas, downloads, http etc? And still get nice video out for my screen?

Crude I know, but I have one USB stick with ESXi on it, and one USB stick with XBMC Live on it, and I just put in whichever USB stick I fancy.

Yea I get you. I just read up the thread and didn't realise Hyper-V could do GPU passthrough, that is fairly epic tbh, I will give this a go!

got a link handy?

Does this mean.... that I could instal hyper-v 'barebones' and actually run xbmc (or any other number of assorted media centres) and get realtime decent performance ?

I think you got my quote misunderstood. Whitecrook talked about using a Win2K8R2 host with the HyperV role as his virtualisation platform and not HyperV as an installable type 1 hypervisor.

If he installs it as a server role, the underlying Win2K8R2 can have its graphics card accelerated by virtue of installing the right graphics driver. I have no idea whether the HyperV guest OS'es can have their GFX accelerated or not to be honest.

VMWare is at the stage where it has experimental 3D acceleration IIRC but since I don't use my Microserver with a dedicated graphics card I couldn't tell you if it would work or not.

as tbk has just explained, I read into it too much, and probably what I wanted to read :( sorry

I am after some advice please.. I have been running an N36L for a month or so, with only WHS011 and Mezzmo installed, for the purpose of streaming video content.. all has been fine until I experienced some buffering issues today and on checking the server my 60gb C: partition was totally full..

Given that I am not using C: for any storage or backups, I am a bit confused by this. On checking each folder it seems C/users/administator is using 40gb, but I can not see any files in it taking up more than a few mb..

I do have 3 other PCs with user profiles created.. could this be it? or some kind of Mezzmo buffer/sync? Hidden files?

obviously I am a bit of a nub in this area so go easy on me :)

Have a look in the documents and settings and see what is taking up the most space.

Google WinDirStat for a nice bit of software that'll show you exactly where your space has gone (if you have the free space to install it).

Thanks! that helped me find it.. it was the Mezzmo transcoding folder in Users\Administrator\AppData\Local. Cheers! :)

Just picked one of these up, delivered today so rushed home to install ESXi (I have 8gb on order but it's not due for delivery until end of next week)..

Unfortunately I can't get it to install with the standard 2gb Ram, it complains I don't have enough memory :( I've dropped the video memory down to 32mb and it's still short of it's 1.97gb needed to install. Guess I'll have to wait before I get it set up.

So I'm looking again at this solution as I will be moving house soon and will need a backup/media streaming solution and vm playground.

My thoughts are

8gb of ram
4x 1 tb
1x 2.5 inch 500gb for VM OS running off the esata port with bios hack.
usb with esxi 5

I will then use DRM to present the disks to a VM and set up a RAID 5 array from the 4x1tb drives

Have I made any assumptions in the above that wouldn't work?

So what OS should I use to RAID the disks and present an NFS share? Deduplication would be nice...

Whats the Bios hack?

If you are presenting the disks to the VM and then doing RAID5 within the VM then you're not really getting RAID 5 are you? if one of the host drives failed won't it still loose the data?

That works, I am using it with Hyper-V. It just acts the same as a physical machines using RAID.

Finally got round to putting 8gb Ram in, used OCUK Value.

It has improved it tenfold, copying to it is about 2x faster, and it flawlessly send video to ATV2 720P over wifi, whilst I am doing other things on it.

Have some automated scripts set up for startup, at the moment on startup I have:

Itunes Server
Unified Remote Server
Dropbox

and a script to search for new movies from my laptop, copy them over, and download and update my XBMC central database.

Thrilled with it at the moment, just messing around with it day to day.

What O/S are you running?
