Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

£254 inc delivery. It's got a Borg decal skin on it as well, just fancied something a bit different. Only got stock photos because, like I say, won't get my hands on it for 2 weeks, just sitting there at home, waiting! lol.

Any photos yet? Thanks.

Did you know that you can set up a PPTP VPN within WHS 2011? I shouldn't be surprised since it is Windows 2008 R2 under the skin, I just thought MS would disable this stuff :)

I can now VPN in and use the shared folders etc just like I do when I am at home :)

So easy to do as well :)

Right have installed WHS2011 to the 250GB hard disk that came with the box, put this into the top bay.

Have fitted 2 * 1 TB drives into the hot swap bays and 2 * 2 TB drives into the other 2 hot swap bays, now I want to mirror the 2 2 TB drives how do I do this?

A dum question but I can't get my head around it, have enabled Raid in the bios but when I go into the setup all I can see is the separate drives and can't seem to do anything with them.

An easy to follow guide would be appreciated.

If i where you i would set WHS 2011 to do the backups from 1 x 2tb to the other, then 1 x 1tb to the other.

Its the way i run it.

Also you can go back if you delete something unlike RAID.

Are any of you guys running an SSD in place of the original 250GB HD that's supplied?

Basically I have my Microserver setup with ESXi installed on a USB stick, then my VMDK's sit on the 250GB drive. The biggest bottleneck for running multiple machines is the old mechanical disk, but mainly due to the latency and low IOPS...out and out sustained transfer rates aren't going to make much difference.

Tempted to stick a 120GB+ SSD in there as I believe this would make a huge difference to running multiple VM's with all the constant low writes.

Can someone recommend one? I'd suspect it's only a SATA2 port also.

I recently put a 120GB SSD (Crucial M4) into mine. However, I am not running ESXi, just a Windows Server 2008 R2 install. Noise is definitely reduced and bootup and other stuff is quicker.

If you do go the SSD router, beware that the 2.5">3.5" brackets you get with most of them will not fit in the drive caddies. I used an icydock thing in the end, which fits perfectly.

Never needed a bios option on mine. Stuck 2 x 4GB sticks on Non ECC RAM in there and it works perfectly.

Same, Mine has 2 x 4gb and the same OS as yours (might be R2 standard). 99% all of mine shows as usable, but will check when I get home. Previously I had 5Gb (4 + 1) of ECC and that all showed as usable as well.
