Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

was going to get silent gfx card with hdmi output

Would that make sound come out of a machine that has no sound card? If so that is a really neat solution considering there are only 2 expansion slots. I already have a NIC in one of my slots so I thought my chances of getting sound and video (via 2 cards) was not possible.

Has anyone done this and can confirm that movies/music could be output to a TV like this?

It should work as it has a built in audio chip.

The 6450 cards? I assume the audio can only be output via HDMI (unless the backplate of the card has audio outputs?).

Do any other low profile fanless Graphics cards have such features? I asked about a sound/video card combo ages ago in this thread and no-one mentioned it. I guess this is not a sound card in the traditional sense, but it has the same effect if your output device is HDMI, which my TV is.

Just checked OCUK and the 6450's are really cheap. Bar the amount of memory are they all the same and all able to play HD content (mp4/mkv etc) without any issues?

A reviewer on one of the cards on OCUK suggests that he has no problems with Bluerays and HD video ?

Hey guys i was looking at buying a HP ProLiant MicroServer N40L, as i have a fair few files and was wondering what kinda speeds i would be getting, if say i was transferring a 2gb file from my pc to the server?

My MS Plan.. is this doable.. and what do i need?

Im a compsci student so i know how to use linux etc im just not sure how to go about setting this up, and will i need a raid card, and a gfx card? and how much ram would be reccomended..

250GB drive in the 5.25" bay, running esxi, with freenas and a linux distro vm (fedora or debian not decided),
4x2TB disks in the slots, 3 in raid 5, accessible by apple tv/computers in the house for media and some redundancy

the final 2tb disk to be split into 3x600GB partitions for the 3 people that live in my house, each partition encrypted so its private and no one person can access everyone data

the admin/root on the linux partition will only have access to the media and the 250GB disk for installing programs/applications and then 3 user accounts linked to each partition for the 3 people using it

Is this do-able? or too complex?

the 2TB which is split into 3 partitions id still like to be accesible over freenas (passwords will be required obviously)

you just need the hardware/software and the patience to set up all the volumes, shares and passwords :)

the only thing I'm not sure on is the encryption of the partitions..... but with good password access ... maybe this won't be a requirement?

I got my server set up yesterday but I'm getting really slow transfer speed. Teracopy says it's maxing out at about 5.3 MB/s with an average speed of 4.3MB/s. Any suggestions on how to solve this issue?

I've searched this thread and have seen mentions of checking the NIC settings in the BIOS but I can't see anything about that in the BIOS.

but even if set up properly will the root user not have access to everything?

do i need a raid card for raid5 and do i need a gfx card for 1080p streaming to atv?

or does the atv just access the file rather than recieve a stream? (jb with xbmc)

cheers for the reply!

How have you got the server set up?

hardware? software? drive config etc :)

Gotta have a admin account somewhere :)

do what I did with my wife with her personal share.... look away when you show them where to enter the share access password

use software RAID and no raid card needed with FreeNAS

this :) it provides for the file for ATV to encode to the TV

The answer is very simple.

You will have to get rid of the software raid.

Software is usally slow and unreliable.

How many drives do you have?
I'm still getting slow speeds when copying to a single drive that isn't part of an array.

I have 4x 2TB drives in the RAID5 array and a single 250GB drive used as the boot drive.
