Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

I think it would be a different story if you had 2 drives running 24/7.

the velociraptor runs 24/7 sitting right at the top.

gonna look to see if i can get some sort of mesh cover for the dvd drive bay, that way can get bit more air intake to cool the top drives. from what iv seen with this setup, its just takes a tiny bit of airflow over the drives to make a massive temp difference.

Just wanted to share this little snippet of code that I needed to run yesterday.

I created a separate xbmc account on my server 2012 install with read only access to the movies and tv shows folders on my microserver. I didn't want the password to expire so I ran the command below in a powershell prompt (as administrator):

Code:
net user xbmc /expires:never

Might be useful for someone else.

After much consideration this close to christmas, I folded and thought this was too good on an offer to be missing out on. I'll admit though, now that I've placed the order, I cannot wait for it to arrive so I begin tinkering! :)

One thing on my mind though, is I'm looking for a graphics card since I don't intend on using this machine purely as a NAS box. Ideally, I'm looking for something cheap, reliable and powerful enough that comes with a DVI output.

Sapphire HD 6450 HM 512MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card

I was just wondering what you guys (and girls) think? I'm open to opinions since this was one of the first cards that fit the bill. If you have anything that you could recommend, and for possibly even cheaper than the price listed above, then please do let me know! :)

this has probably been mentioned before so sorry, but what about the 5th bay (DVD Drive) how do you go about adding a extra hdd. I'd assume a 5 inch to 3/12 converter for the frame then how do you power it is there a cable there already ? and what about data?

Ive read the HP spec sheet and it just references 4 internal bays but also mentions a half height optical drive so I don't know if there is enough bays, is it a case of an esata to sata cable ?

Cheers

Use a converter as you said. There is a 4 pin molex connector to power a drive so a adaptor is needed to power a sata disk. For data people use the sata connector on the mother board for the 5th drive if a 6th drive is gonna be added then the e-sata connector on the rear of the device is used with an adaptor.

You only ever see half-height optical bays on modern desktop PC's.

I have a https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-259-AS in mine. I think (around when I got it) a lot of people in this thread recommended the cards with that GPU in it, so quite a few have it installed running XBMC, PLEX and other Media front ends and it runs everything without a hitch AFAIK (as long as the software you use can use the hardware decoder on the card).

I am surprised the card(s) are the same price as they were 6 months ago though....

Shall be super quick! Will also use the SSD for hard-drive caching.

CASHBACK ON N40L ENDS 31st DECEMBER

Just been informed by a server reseller that HP have announced they are no longer continuing the cashback offer on the N40L past 31/12/12

So if you want an N40L better get one quick.

I asked whether the N54L would be covered by a cashback deal and the supplier said he had no idea at this stage.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was of course, but nothing official either way on the N54L yet.

Would be surprised if they didnt go for some months atleast of cashback offers on it, think that is one thing that boosted the volume of sales (aswel as the product being a decent budget home server)

Hi all, having some issues.

Background

N36L, 4GB RAM.

I have 6 x 2TB drives in Windows SW RAID 5. I have a small 200GB drive for OS.

Now one drive is acting up. Might be the C drive, might be part of the RAID group but it's screwing the whole system.

The problem

I'm trying to start again. I want to make a RAID 1 group with 4 x 2TB drives and then install the OS on this.

Problem is the RAID (CTRL + F?) option isn't showing up. I have changed the BIOS from ACHI to RAID but still no joy.

Any ideas how to force it to come up or what may be stopping it from coming up?

Well just bought mine and the website provided me with a claim form going to the 31st of January, although shouldn't be a problem as i should get the unit on Monday hopefully.

Im planning on bumping this up to 8 or 16gb of memory could some point me in the direction of a pack that would work with this server. Is it just the pc3 10666 that will work or will the 12800 work as well?
