Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Use a converter as you said. There is a 4 pin molex connector to power a drive so a adaptor is needed to power a sata disk. For data people use the sata connector on the mother board for the 5th drive if a 6th drive is gonna be added then the e-sata connector on the rear of the device is used with an adaptor.

You only ever see half-height optical bays on modern desktop PC's.

thank you kind sir :)

Hi all,

Has anyone used a PCI nic card to provide more interfaces for things like hyper-v or vmware? And if so any suggestions on good cards to use?

For performance and compatibility stick to Intel NICs.

Rebadged single and multi-port Intel PT adapters can be picked up fairly cheaply second-hand.

For a new single port card the Intel CT is the obvious choice.

Thanks for the advice i may look for a cheap second hand card to go in my server.

Having a dedicated NIC for my virtual switch that doesnt affect the underlying os would be quite nice

If you're still waiting, email me your address.

Did it give you a bounce, cuz I swear thats a proper email in there. Regardless, I sent you a mail.

^^^ nearly happened to me. I took them off and zap they went missing, not sure how they turned up again either (almost next to the server tucked away in the loft). Having it set up as a home server I do not need the locked type cabinet but I have little doubt that they will vanish again when I need to open the case.

In fact I'll just go up now to the loft armed with some sellotape.....

Is it worth putting the OS on an ssd or just a normal 2.5 mechanical drive? Just want to save a bay. Cheers

What OS? if it is Linux you could run it of a USB connected internally, but with Windows you would need a drive.

'Borrowed' from here:http://www.tekforums.net/guides-projects/hp-proliant-microserver-purchase-upgrade-setup-guide/
However you can fit a slim SSD or laptop HD in the top section along side another HD or optical drive, but you will need to take a feed from the eSATA and pass it through the cover over the PCI slots. If used I believe you will need to slide this in under the top part of the chasis above the HD array bays, this obviously wont be mounted securely!!!

My plan is to use all four bays, then get a double drive mount to run 2x 3.5 drives in the Optical drive bay(one for the OS, one for storage), then if I really need it add a 2.5 drive as per the above as well, but I don't see me gettting to that stage for a while.

Hope this is of some help.

Going for whs 2011 as probably the most feature full

I was going for 4 large 3.5 drives in the 4 bays
Another large bay in the ODD bay connected by esata and the OS drive to the internal sata port of

I guess I meant more that is an ssd worth it over a mechanical in this server?

Guys, Im a bit of newbie to all this stuff, im trying weigh up whether to go for a N40L or stick to a QNAP.

I basically want it for accessing my media on the go (and around the house) and for back up purposes, I have a QNAP 212 already and its a 2 bay unit with 2 3tb WD reds, but im thinking in future when I want to upgrade Im going to be knackered.

Am I right in thinking that this is basically a low power PC, and i can use it like a PC, albeit with limited expandability. Im thinking if i go for a 4 bay Qnap or Synology im looking at £400, the N40L is pretty much £100 (after cashback), which makes it a no brainer? or am i missing something?

And could I drop the 2 WD reds into it and have ~6tb storage and use my existing 3tb seagate as a back for both drives?

Ta and happy holidays!
