Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Has anyone had success getting AirVideo Server running under Linux on one of these with acceptable live conversion?

Yeah you need to turn down the bitrate/quality (sorry cant remember how) as the CPU just can't handle it. I ran it for a while but gave up as it was too choppy if more than one person tried to watch anything. If there is a way to get the GPU (if you have one) to do the legwork I'd imagine it would work well.

Starting to use my Proliant ML110 a little more now but would like to be able to turn it ON remotely. can this be done?
The network card on the machine supports WOL (Wake On LAN) according to http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11889_na/11889_na.HTML.

So if you have another PC on the same network you should be able to 'ping' the server's IP address and wake the machine up that way. You might need a specific program to do the waking rather than use a command prompt in Windows. I've downloaded, but not yet used, http://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/wake-on-lan-gui.aspx as I'm thinking about setting a few machines at work to wake up in the morning to save people time as the PCs are quite slow to load up.

Im going to be using my mac most of the time, i relocated the server and my home hub etc last night and all is working well, incl, remote desktop via my macbook and would just like to get this part done. Have you ever used HP iLO?

Nah I haven't used iLO. Do you have to buy it or is there a free basic version?

Why not just set Wake on LAN on the NIC and use any of the WOL programs on your MAC? I have WOL enabled on the NIC on my Microserver and use http://www.readpixel.com/wakeonlan/ to wake it up. I don't even use the program, it has a dashboard widget you click and you can hear/see your server bootup. 30-45 seconds later I fire up RDP and I am connected.

iLO is a bit excessive just for WOL imo. Firing up a web browser to turn on the machine (last time I used iLO you need to have JAVA installed as well). Most OS/phone/tablets will have a simple 1 touch WOL app/widget that is much quicker.

p.s. There is no "pinging" involved. You are sending a "magic packet" which is ia UDP port 9 iirc. You can even do this over the internet, should you need to, as long as your forward the relevant ports etc.

You have to buy it for the Microserver. It's included with the higher end machines. IIRC even the ML110 how has it. Fairly pointless for a home machine anyway.
Ah OK. :) I can see that iLO is HP stuff for high end servers. :p

Nice Mac prog there. I'm half wondering if I can set my work PC to wake up for 7:30am and then once it's up and running to then WOL a few PCs around the school. Could earn muchos kudos doing that. ;)

Anybody ran any of these servers with a PicoPSU at all? the noise from the PSU is a bit annoying, but im not sure if the PICO 120w will be man enough for 4 hdd and a Radeon 6450?

The stock PSU it comes with is only 150W. I ordered a pico myself yesterday, went with the 160W to be sure. I've got 4x 2TB drives and a passive cooled 6450 too. Haven't ordered the extender mentioned in this thread, and not sure how will get the connector out the case so will prob take some time lol

how long is it before you get confirmation of a cashback claim from HP? i sent mine in the post.

Sorry for the delayed response. Ive been working on an asignment all day..and still here :o

The only reason i mentioned the ilo is that i remember a member called dashik saying he was using it and dont recall him paying anything.

going to try out the wake on lan here now to see how i get on. Thanks

Ive just installed the PicoPSU and a quieter fan, seems to be working just fine with 4 hdds, and a radeon 6450. and its nice and quiet, just noise from the HDD to sort out. I think its the 250gb unit rather than the WD reds or the Seagate 3tb.

How do you plane to sort out the HDD noise/vibrations? I have an SSD in a caddy, some random 500GB WD (maybe blue) and 2 x 2TB greens. Every now and then when the machine boots or sometimes while it is on, I hear a vibration sound. Sometimes it disappears after 10-15 mins, which makes me think the drive making the vibration spins down? Normally I just move the server slightly (literally just push it a couple of mm with my hand) and the noise stops.

No idea which drive it is though and even though I have opened the front when the noise is on I can't isolate it. Also it does this every now and then so hard to do any real testing.

I am replacing the 500GB with a 3TB Red next week, maybe that will fix it, if it is the 500GB 7200RPM drive that is the culprit.

Well finally got round to setting up my N40L :). Receieved a "CT2KIT102464BA1339 16GB kit (8GBx2), 240-pin DIMM" of 16gb Crucial RAM so installed that in place of the 2gb and had 16gb show up first time. Also added a USB stick with FreeNAS 8.3 on it to the internal port.

Booted up and all works so I'm happy! Just need to order 6 x 3tb drives (looking at going for either 6 x WD 3TB Reds or 6 x Seagate Constellation CS 3tb drives) to fill out the storage and enable me to run Raid-Z2.

Currently able to max out my gig network with just the 250gb so speeds are looking good! :)

Maybe a stupid question that's already been covered here but as the thread is rather large now thought I'd just ask :)

Would one of these with some RAM chucked in be fine to stick a flavour if Windows Server on and be up to DC (for say 10 machines/uesrs) and file + print sharing duties ok?

Am guessing so but wondered if people here had done so (not exactly the most demanding of uses I know!).

Ev0, one of the most popu;ar OSs for these things is windows home server, people have also had anything from windows 7 to windows server 2008 to windows server 2012.
not to mension the linux OSs like Ubuntu & freenas.
from what i'm reading, windows home server should do what you want only about £38, but it does go end of like in a few years time. Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Foundation ROK is £139.16 Ex VAT not much more than a new windows 7 livence.
