Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Not a solution though is it. A SATA controller or power failure still has the potential to nuke all your drives at any given moment rendering your backup plan useless.

The only absolutely fool proof method of backup is something off site whether it's something cloudbased like crash plan or an external drive or two that are kept in a fire proof safe

that's already been restored to a standby server and verified... no garantee the backup is any good unless you do that

I'm sure there's a well known saying about eggs and baskets...

With the really important stuff that I really don't want to lose backed up to my 2nd microserver. Although this is currently adjacent to server number 1 it should do in case of a serious occurrence on server 1.
I've just started to look into housing server 2 or possibly an additional number 3 elsewhere (probably different building but same LAN) as well as a UPS.

Hoping I can automate my main server to monitoring the UPS and when the UPS has around an hour remaining it will shut itself down.

i dont know why i was really concerned with configuring WOL for my N54L

reading about the power cosumption online and it seems teeny tiny! Had mine running non-stop since the middle of June.

Just going through the process of moving files to the server and watching them using the RaspberryPi.

Really enjoying my server so far :D thanks for all the help

Possible stupid question alert - do these have HDMI output?

And how long do these normal stay on offer @ £129.99 for? :D

VGA only. It's intended as a small office server. If you want to HTPC it you can add a low profile AMD 6450 card for about £25 with HDMI. Loads of info back in the thread.

Price - can't say. The previous offers were usually around £200 with £100 cashback via HP.

Is it overkill to use the N54L as a NAS?

I'm only using an N40L. So Yes. ;)

I don't think so. Mine is used as a NAS, it's running Stablebits Drivepool and Scanner. Great pooling and drive monitoring software - Sent me an email that my external drive was overheating at 65c. Toasty!

Since building a ESXi homelab a few weeks ago I have downgraded the duties of my microserver. Namely Plex duties, as running any kind of HD transcoding on the microsever brings it to its knees. The video library still resides on the microserver pool though.

Which OS are you running?

I've pulled the trigger on a N54L and 16GB RAM.

I assume any USB (8GB+) is fine for the boot drive? Don't fancy paying more than I need to but don't want a drive with dog **** read/write speeds.

Any advice?

I hope you'll be using it for more than a NAS with 16GB of RAM!

NAS and a Plex host. I'm going with ZFS on FreeNAS and they recommend a minimum of 8GB.

Question is, do I need 3TB WD Reds when I already have 2x 3TB Seagate Barracuda?

Out all day yesterday, came back to find my N54L making a horrendous noise.

It appears to be coming from the PSU fan which was upgraded along with the main one in October. System hasn't been off since then except for reboots so has probably collected a lot of dust.

Hoping a clean out will sort it, otherwise back to the stock fan :(

I wouldn't trust the Seagates personally especially after seeing this

Don't put two much faith in it, their figures may be honest but the conditions in which their data was gathered is nothing even remotely resembling real world usage, they are buying consumer HDDs and stuffing them into proprietary rack mount cases, no consumer would do anything like that with consumer grade drives, their results only show something that can happen if you abuse HDD's
