...and the network transfer speed (over gigabit)

Wow... Very nice :)

I'd love to use FreeNAS as I found it to be very decent performance when I tried it but it seems a bit awkward unless you can justify the up-front cost of a full batch of drives as EVH has above - if you plan to gradually add drives over time to fill the server out then FreeNAS isn't so great starting out

Having said that what I might do is try switching to FreeNAS once I finish buying all my drives, using an external drive or two to hold the data during the re-installation and then get it copied back across afterwards

Good innit! :D

No rack here, just the bottom shelf of an Ikea Billy...

I like the speed! Currently using CIFS shares as I only have my gaming PC and the girlf has a windows laptop, but hoping later this year to pickup a MacBook Pro (her bro is giving her a MacBook Air for helping him set up his business  ) and switch to AFP.

The beauty of using ZFS is I could create the AFP dataset and just transfer all data from the CIFS shares, then nuke the CIFS shares.

At the moment I've set up my user in the "wheel" group with the auxiliary group as "Family", and my girlf in the "Family" group. This lets me manage both CIFS shares, whilst she can only access her share (less confusing for her) :)

Do you know what would look even better? Another one, just right next to it, just for ***** and giggles

:D

Leave it out! That's a 39U rack! I don't have enough stuff to fill another, or the room under the stairs to fit it :p:D

That's probably a better way of doing it than I'm using. As it's only me using it, there's no real access control on it.

I've got a single dataset with two volumes both shared via CIFS and AFP. Had some problems with the early releases of FreeNAS 9 where files copied over using CIFS from a Windows PC were not accessible from AFP. Moved the data via CIFS to a Mac, then copied it back via AFP and it's been fine since. AFP's a tad slower, around 90MB/sec.

Just been looking at these as I have wanted one for a while. They have shot up in price though :(

Eh? They're £130 if you look in the right place...

On the upside there's no gaffing around with cashback, and they've got twice the RAM.

Everyone I know that bought one immediately replaced the HDD and put more RAM in...

I know. I'm just being fussy and cheap I guess. I keep looking out for a used one that already has some upgrades. I think I might have to bite the bullet eventually though. My HTPC is getting pretty crammed with storage space now. Plus I have to keep it on 24/7 as a media server.

My N40L was 20-25W with a single drive on an Aldi plug in meter thingy. Add 5W for the faster CPU in the N54L and 5W per additional HDD and you'll be about right.

Next to nothing in the grand scheme of things then! Tempted as a NAS, always have to turn on my main pc if I want to access any video or photos from my main pc!

Previously I had two Firewire boxes each with a pair of hard drives - 25W each, plus the Mac mini they were attached to.

So 40W for the N40L, vs 75W for the Mac combo.
