Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

I changed my fan to a noiseblocker - the one somebody linked to earlier in this thread, and it works fine (you have to chop the guard off of the header and plug it in the wrong way round and offset by 1 pin though)

no worries, I did that already on 4 pin extension I'm using as I didn't want to destroy the headers on fans themselves.

any chance you have the P/N (will save me reading through the thread)

how much improvement over stock would you say?

Sorry I don't know the P/N, would have to search this thread myself for it :p

Improvement over stock I think is pretty good, although if you've still got the 40mm PSU fan going it's a little hard to tell as that fan dominates the noise - I replaced that fan in mine with a noiseblocker as well and even then it's still the noisiest part... Quiet enough overall to hear the drives

What 4GB stick of memory do you guys recommend? Mine came with a single 4GB and would like to stick another in. I've found the same speed for around £31, but not sure if just any old RAM is compatible?

Thanks.

Strange occurances wiht my server...
Running 2K8 server

Installed the latest ATi drivers and its upgraded my 6450 to a 7450
It's an XFX 1GB 6450

This happenned to anyone else?

Not sure, I'll pull it out tomorrow & check.

Shouild whatever I put in be ECC?
You can't mix ECC with non-ECC. The HP RAM that comes with the MicroServer *is* ECC, so if it's the original RAM, then your additional RAM needs to be ECC also.

Hey guys.

It appears one of my 2 daughters have "misplaced" the keys for my N54L... Does anyone have a spare I could buy? I can't find them online but apparently they are all the same lock. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated - want to put in a new 3TB drive!! :)

Thanks in advance

Grahame

Would the N54L with 4x3TB drives be a better option than an Asustor AS-204TE with 3x3TB drives to use as a NAS for media and backup?

The specs list this as RAID 0/1 only whereas I would most likely use RAID 5 with the Asustor, which is recommended for this?

If I go for the N54L I can add in a 128GB SSD for the OS, but which OS would be recommended to use this as a media center, backup and allow access to files while away from home?

Edit:
I have Sever 2008 R2, Server 2012, Windows 7 and Windows 8 keys available but would I be better off using some form of NAS OS?
Also, I've been reading a bit of this thread and see a recommendation for some software to combine the drives rather than using RAID. That sounds like it may be a good option.

Software RAID is your only option if you want more than 0 or 1 and it's not bad. I'm using RAIDZ1 (similar to RAID 5) with 4 disks using FreeNAS and am quite happy. YOu still need to make sure you have a backup though (with ANY setup) as with RAID5/Z1 you have 1 failure tolerance, then there's the chance another fails during rebuild as it's quite a stressful process

I have a mix of ECC and non-ECC and it works fine.
Interesting. Just did a quick Google, and it looks like it is dependent on multiple factors:

- Motherboard/chipset support for mixing matching
- The individual memory modules (some will work together, others won't)
- Overall long-term stability of the system

So I guess if it works, great, but I think the original statement is probably still valid, i.e. assume it won't work, unless someone (like yourself) knows of a case where it does.

Or add a controller card.

N54L, Xpenology and use SHR would be perfect for you.

Thank you both, going to get it all ordered now :).

Edit: Ordered now, along with a few other things. Expensive day... :(

I have read on another forum someone mentioning they had mixed RAM and it worked fine but i suspect as you said it can very kuck of the draw if the modules will work together. I will say that the system is very stable though as i've had an uptime of over a recently.

Anyone running Fedora/Centos/Redhat with virtualisation? I got this to be my NAS replacement but also want to use it for VMs for exam practise so I dont' have to run them on my main machine.
