Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Picked one of these up a few months back whilst the cashback offer was on and decided to install the P410 RAID card. Part of me wishes I hadn't spent the extra cash seeing as people seem to be using software RAID quite happily.

I've been using the unit as a HTPC and low end gaming system for stuff like back to the future ... thinking of converting it just to a NAS though an buy a NUC system for HTPC and gaming duties.... still not sure though.

Just putting the feelers out...

I have a single stick of original EEC RAM (4GB) from when I purchased the N54L a few weeks ago. If anyone wants to buy it, I can put on the MM.

Without a heads up I doubt anyone would spot it, so this ISNT an attempt at trading outside the MM :p

May be interested (price dependent ;))

Might be following suit here mate :p received my 16gb yesterday somehow! didnt realize things were delivered on Sundays.... especially when you opt for free delivery on a Friday eve

Might head over to MM now.

Wondering if someone might be able to lend me a hand here, i have installed Ubuntu on my Server 2012 Hyper V host and it seems really laggy when on the desktop moving the cursor around. It has 2048gb of ram and i cant see any reason why it would be so dam slow. Windows on the other hand is smooth as you like. Could it be a simple Linux driver issue?

I would appreciate a heads up if such an item was to be put on the MM!

I've had a poke around online and whilst I could get a reasonable approximation to the N54L through getting a J1900 board, by the time I've assembled it in a server style case, got PSU etc, I don't see any reason not to grab the microserver to be honest...

Question on the modded BIOS - having had a read around, the only real benefit I can see is that you can set SATA to be hot-pluggable, which I don't really care about.

Any other reasons to go for the modded BIOS?

Smeg. What do you do if you flash the modified BIOS and then it won't POST? :(

The flash looked like it worked fine - went through the flash procedure and ended at the C prompt.

Aha :)

Use the above instructions if you brick it. I tried this several times until I tried one other thing - disconnect any hard drives. Worked first time :)

Which is a shame as I've bought a replacement Gen8. Watch out for a top spec N54L in the MM soon...

You'll need to install the integration tools, not sure if they're available for ubuntu, last time I checked it was Suse only but that was way way back.... And before you ask I've not done that under Linux ;)

Thanks DHR i'll take a look for sure

Does anyone maybe have the chipset drivers for the N54L? Cant find them anywhere and the Basic windows video adapter is really bugging me!

Righto,

Done
Gaffer taped a 2.5" 120GB sata hdd into the ODD bay
OMV installed to 120GB
2x3TB striped.
Copied over all data
Setup MySQL server for the XBMC shared library
Setup NFS shares for Raspbmc to access.
Connect all XBMC clients to MySQL server.

To do
Fit 2 x 3TB when they arrive tomorrow.

How are you finding OMV?

The main reason to use the modified BIOS is to enable AHCI mode on the sata port in the optical bay and the esata port.

If your using either of these ports for harddrives its pretty useful.

You can run 6 harddrives in a standard microserver, 4 in the bays and 2 mounted in the optical bay but you need to use an esata cable to connect one of them to the port on the back of the microserver.

Quite a few of us use the 4 normal harddrives for storage and another drive (I use a Solid-state drive) in the optical bay ..... with AHCI enabled to get maximum speed.

Got a dillema, I have been using Windows Server 2012 fine until I decided I wanted to use a VPN. I have been using PIA VPN and it works except the kill switch, I have tried a few apps to emulate this such as VPN Check Pro but I don't want it changing the computer name every restart (as it kicks out my XBMC smb share) AND can't find any other way to kill internet access when the VPN is down on Windows Server.

So my questions are:-

Does anyone know any software that kills network access (or shuts down software) that works on Windows server?

Or

Would it be worth migrating the sever to Windows 7?

Or

Would a Hyper V instance of Windows 7 work with a VPN and kill switch?

Cheers for your help
