Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Confirming that transcoding 1080p is a struggle. That said majority of the media I obtain streams to my Chromecast without the need to transcode.

I have a few questions. It's probably been answered, but I don't really want to read through 100 odd pages.

Are these servers upto Plex transcoding?

Can I install standard SATA HDD's in them?

Any recommendations as to which OS to install? I just want to use it as a Plex server, so either a free OS or using a Windows 7 licence I already have.

Thanks in advance.

A single 1080p stream is probably about all it will manage. Normal SATA HDDs are fine most people opt for Western Digital Reds.

Ifs it going to be nothing more than plex/files shares and you aren't afraid of Linux the personally that's the best route as it'll be a lot less of a resource hog than windows 7

Indeed. I pretty much use a fresh install of Arch Linux and just Plex. Designed to be as lightweight as possible. I just upload media to it via WinSCP.

I've currently got my Plex server running on i3 2120 with 8 GB ram and steaming to multiple devices isn't an issue.

Looking at the price of these, I was hoping I could put the PC I currently have my Plex server running on to better use.

Steaming isn't an issue until the media needs transcoding. If there is no need to transcode then these can steam to multiple devices fine.

All the devices I stream to are Now TV boxes, so 720p max for them. Most of the files are MKV files. I also stream to a Roku 2 XS and my iPhone.

I assume they all require transcoding?

Yeah, what I meant was the file is 1080p on my server and I had no issues with it playing back on a Now box (whether transcoded or not) at the 720p the Now box does.

Anyone know how to get the estata port working with an esata to sata cable.

I can't seem to get mine picked up. I have flashed the bios ect and followed some guides with no luck anyone got info on it?

How are you mapping the drive? Permissions at the moment are only for users of the server. You'd have to map the drive with credentials of a server user.
Just by going on to the client computers and "Map Network Drive", enter the location of it. I then login using the same credentials as my server and it maps correctly but just gives me an empty folder.

Every MKV I have used required transcoding on Plex to a phone or Chromecast

i use plex to send video to an android media player. no transcoding is required. Not quite as successful with my GS4 though. its not true that plex requires transcoding, its down to the hardware at the other end.
