Been offered a Mk2 Golf 16v for £250.

Description and pictures below. Going to have a skeg at weekend.

My golf is a 1989 GTI 16V. 132,000 on the clock. Big bumpers, origonal 16Valloys (Don't look great) I've changed the clutch roughly 1000 miles ago, put a new water pump and oil cooler on it and a brand new MFA/wiper stalk inside. MOT till 05 Sept 07 but no road tax on it. The interior is good, the dash board is imaculate, extremely good condition as they usually have chunck and grooves in them. Usual boulster wear on the drivers seat. The passenger window switch needs replacing (£12ish from GSF) but you could try taking it apart and playing with it. It runs well, never let me down, starts first time from cold. Plenty of tread on the tyres. £250.

I'll tidy it up, lowered around 80mm, 8" wheels :D...Best not, I'm past those days.

Problem is insurance, I want to insure the car for about 5k a year, I will only use it to rag around at weekends. I have a daily running car already.
I want my GF on the insurance too, quotes are £460TPFT. I'm 22 with 2 years no claims. Not good enough really.

Of course it's a good deal, it's one of the fastest and best hot hatches of the 80's for £250 with MOT!. Unless it's utterly, utterly shagged out then it's worth more than that in parts alone.

Does anyone cheap insurance companys for say 'weekend cars'?

I really don't want to be paying £500 for a car to be used under 5k mile a year. Its ridiculous.

Not really, consider you have no claim, 2 drivers on a Golf GTI ? granted its old but still going to be on the road regardless. It's not going to be much cheaper unless you get something like a old fiesta, but then you might pay £500 for that and it might be a rusty nail.

I'd buy it, theyre pretty easy to fix if the engine breaks anyways and 130000 miles is nothing on a mk2 golf.

the price is probably about right the 16v lost value when leaded petrol was stopped, they didnt take too well to unleaded/that other stuff which is supposedly for leaded cars. The timing iirc had to be retarded and as such it lost a little power (the 8v were fine)

buy it !

even if you dont keep it surely with a bit of work and some tax youd easy make a bit of cash

and having a car already is no excuse , sell it and just use the golf :D

That's a bargain, ideal weekend toy!

I've had good quotes from Adrian Flux and Greenlight on my Golf as a second car. Try insuring it as a classic.
