Good old Serwotka.

It's the principle that counts though - "We'll put a hole in the lifeboat unless we get what we want" is how the unions come across.

That is what happens when employers (in this case The Govt) refuse to listen to their employees concerns and in some cases actively create division and consternation.

Yup - chain a mans wrist to a wall and light a fire under his feet and he'll chew his own arm off.

Bit of an extreme comparison but I'm sure you know what I mean.

Serwotka is making a wonderful case to the public for significant restrictions on the right to strike and the trade union movement...

The solution to protected, legalised blackmailing is to remove the unwarranted protections.

Same could be said for the financial sector and this countries economy. Both lots a bunch of self-serving ******s once you get high enough up the chains of command.

I'd like to see a minimum number of voters stipulated on anything though how governments get in with such minorities is quite amazing really.

It's not just his own arm he's chewing off though, my example I feel is more accurate because everybody suffers, not just the government and the union.

If only 1 in 5 PCS members strike then there won't be any problem will there? But the vast majority will strike because they support the action.

Are you confusing support with the union bullying machine and misplaced ideas of loyalty again?

Will you apply the same logic when the vast majority of the public support a smackdown of the unions?

Well not quite, no. The bank bailouts were done not because the banks were threatening to do harm if they didn't - the banks had already done the harm, trousered the cash and were shrugging their shoulders.

I might be wrong but I would believe that most of the people that are not bothered either way about strike action dont tend to bother to vote in a given situation. If you are all for stike action then you are more likely to vote becuase you have that `stand up and be counted` attitude to whatever the issue is. This is arguably common for most union actions I believe.

Wont happen - at least not in the short time the coalition have left in governance :p

:D Very aptly put I like that! However, I was referring more to the desire they go back to a more Clintonesque structure. (not the card shop the cigar dude)

What Union bullying machine would that be Dolph. Does this go on in PCS?

Will you apply the same logic when the vast majority of the public support a smackdown of the unions?

Aren't you the one saying the we shouldn't listen to the public?

For the vast majority of British people it's better to put up with one bad day due to industrial action during the Olympics than suffer weeks and months of disruption after the Olympics due to the government's mishandled cuts.

Do these people really think that making the UK a laughing stock by going on strike during the Olympics will do ANYTHING to help growth in this country?

It seems they are all it - bus drivers, train drivers, border staff, you name it, lets threaten a strike in the middle of the UK's time on the world stage

We can't let Labour back in yet, their mess isn't cleaned up enough to allow for their fiscal incompetence to come back ;)

If Ed buggers off and we see a "Hollande" style candidate arise I think it's a forgone conclusion.

Give someone and audience and they'll perform :-)

Anyway, I'm out - I've quit TU'ism so can't be bothered discussing it on a forum - dissapointed in myself for getting sucked in anyway - gnight.

It would be the one that occurs in some branches where union representatives and the minority of more militant members set about with whispering campaigns against those who break the strike, yes.

Presumably, you're going to yet again claim this doesn't happen as a PCS rep, and yet your anecdote is rendered invalid by an alternative anecdote from another former rep, who resigned in protest at the behaviour ;)

Aren't you the one saying the we shouldn't listen to the public?

We should be wary of assuming that just because a lot of people believe something, it must be true, however, in this case, barely 11% of the eligible members voted in support of the strike...

I'd rather the unions made us a laughing stock than the private security company attempts to put profit over safety and be so consistently slack they'll get all the world's finest athletes blown up with a cheery allah akbar ...

Sadly, there's no accounting for the stupidity of people. Hopefully Hollande's disaster will hit the french before the economically illiterate idiots of the left take us down the same path.
