I have a couple of questions concerning the Google Navigation App.

How do you set the destination as a point on a map?
The main screen allows speak or type a destination, go home, or map. Yet having accessed map, I can't long hold to set a point and using 'set destination' in the bottom-right settings takes me back to the app home screen.

I believe I've done this before so what am I missing?

Another query is that when driving along, the phone will chime and this isn't related to any other app notifications. Does anyone know what this means? Loss of data connection?

Thanks,

Thanks,

what android version have you got?
First update google maps to the latest version on the play store.
Just tries on mine, SGS2 running 4.0.4:
_ open the "Maps" link of the app drawer
_ find wherever you want to go, hold your finger on it for a bit
_ a pop up menu will come up
_ click on it
_ you can then get direction from there

regarding the second question, can you be more specific?
what phone have you got, stock/non-stock rom, what version of android
I guess battery life?

The chime is because the maps software has to download street names from the net in order to speak them. If there is a permanent or temporary problem with your data connection it will chime instead of telling you the direction. So basically the chime is notification of an upcoming manoeuvre.

If data connection is lost altogether it will speak "Data connection lost".

Thanks for the help.

I'm running the latest jelly bean 4.1.2 on a galaxy nexus with latest Google maps.

Following your instructions I can add destinations in Google maps but can't if I open the navigation app first, selecting maps on the destination screen and then trying to placemark from there. Can you?

Cheers skyfall for answering the chime query.

Ice Globe, the same is true for me. If I want to navigate to a point on the map rather than place of interest or specific address, then I go through maps and long press.

Regarding the chime, I'm not sure why it can't at least say 'turn left' rather than just bong. Surely it has basic voice commands built in even if it can't download the road names for text-to-speak?

Also how does one change the voice? Mine's a man and I don't much like him :p.
