Hi all,

If you're thinking of replacing an older AGP card, then you might be interested in the following.

I posted a few days ago about whether to upgrade my 6800LE to a 6800GS or 7800GS, and eventually decided I'd spent enough money lately and couldn't justify the extra £100 on the 7800, so went for the BFG OC 6800GS which was on special from OCUK.

I've installed it this morning and must say I think it's a pretty good bang for the buck!

My old 6800LE - OC'd to 350/801 scored 2667 in 3d Mark 05

Stock 6800GS - 370/1050 scored 4582 in 3d Mark 05

I then tried to unlock the extra pipeline and vertex shader, but got artifacts on the canyon level... I disabled the vertex shader leaving the pipeline unlocked, and everything was fine!

6800GS with extra pipe unlocked - 370/1050 scored 4958

Finally, I thought I'd OC it a bit!

6800GS with extra pipe - 400/1100 scored 5281

So, I might have been lucky with the pipeline unlocking ok, but basically I've got a card that scored twice as much as my old one, for around £80 to £90 once I've sold on my 6800LE.

I've had a go on COD2 which previously I had to run at 800 x 600, and can now run 1280 x 1024 which was my objective, so overall I'm pretty pleased.

:D

well done mate nice work,
I was going to upgrade my brothers pc with one of those but a lot of poeple were saying that they were ***p compared to the pci-e version wich put me off but now looking at those scores im thinking of going for the ocuk one.
Thanks for the info

Are you running the stock cooler? What kinda core temps are you getting with the overclock?

I only ask as I have the same card but fitted with a zalman vf-700 alucu...getting 56c idle and 80c load on quiet mode, which I think is a tad high for stock speeds

Yes, running the stock cooler.

Running at 400/1100, the idle temps around 45c and under max load about 90c... I've got the fan set at 75%, maybe I should have it at 100%? Does seem high, but then I've never really paid much attention to any of my previous card temps!

I've had ATI Tool running for about an hour and it's not reported any artifacts at all.

I've just run 3dMark06 too.

Score was 2700. 1166 SM2, 1043 HDR/SM3, & 960 CPU.

I might look at upgrading the cooler, but I'm pretty happy for now!

just in case you don't know, modding the bios of the 6800LE or normal to 1.3v gives a huge clock increase.

My old 6800LE 12/6 with the modded bios got 420/940 for core and memory completely stable and without getting hot and gets about 4700 3Dmarks05 with a XP3200.

Shame I didn't know until I bought my 6800 PCIE which clocks to 425/865 but with 256mb gets just over 5150 thanks to the extra memory

Temps for both of them are always below 70C with stock cooler

90c is a bit hot. you should run your fan at 100% in 3D and I wonder if your case needs more fans ;)

Hi i just bought this card as well. Huge performance boost over my old Radeon 9800 128mb.

By the way are you using the beta drivers contained on the accompnaying BFG CD? I cant install the latest official NVIDIA ones, they dont recognise my hardware.

Well I've got a 6800nu and I've got only a shade less than you Tooks in 3D05 - so it answers my question about the upgrade to a GS - hardly worth it.

feriso, totally agree!

If I'd had a standard 6800 (12 pipes etc), then I wouldn't have bothered either. But, compared to a 6800LE, the 6800GS is way faster. (At least on my rig...) I know some folks have had luck unlocking the 6800LE, but mine wouldn't play ball. It OC'd ok though.

Quite apart from the 3dMark scores, as I say above, it now enables me to play COD2 smoothly with 2xAA/AF at 1280 x 1024 (my TFT native resolution). It's a pretty good card for the money I reckon. I was tempted by the 7800GS, but I'm saving my cash for a major upgrade in a years time.

The drivers I'm using are the Betas off the install cd. (82.12 I think).

dogstroker, I unlocked my pipe using RivaTuner, downloaded from guru3d as above.

Sounds good to me - hopefully waiting for the OcUK version arriving tomorrow (it's on offer) and it's replacing a blown 9800pro. Don't know what physical difference there is to the BFG, I figure the BFG is just overclocked at stock so no reason can't match it?

I got RivaTuner but haven't decided what drivers to try.
