Hi just recently bought a x2 4400+ CPU and I would like to try and overclock it. Just got a few ?`s if any one could answer any.

1.does my motherbaord or menory come in to play in any way when i want to overclock my CPU ? in other words will haveing a better type of memory or motherboard allow me to overclock my system more ?

2. Do you no of a guide for overlcoking my 4400+ that you can recomend, maybe a guide you used when you were just starting out ?.

3. on a scale of 1-10 how hard is it to overclock ?

thanks to any one who can help me out. !!

Overclocking the Dual core is easy as a single core IMO

Although most of the time one core becomes unstable so you have to lower the clock.

Quality ram is what you want if your after a 1 : 1 overclock, but most people run their ram on a 166 divider so that it doesnt top out when you raise the FSB.

The oc'ing guide is helpful :)

It's fairly easy. First reduce memory speeds/timings down. That'll give you leeway when you overclock the FSB. Reduce the hypertransport also. Now increase CPU FSB.

2.6ghz should be possible with stock cooler/stock voltage. After overclocking the CPU, bump up memory speed until it fails.

As a reference here is my OC..

Bit out of date, 186mhz memory speed is now stable.

Sorry to bump this thread but I was wondering why Squiffy has set the HT frequency to 400MHz, I thought it was supposed to run @ 1000MHz?

When overclocking if I set it to 800mhz or 1ghz it crashes.
At stock @1ghz it's fine. Other boards seem to have a "x" HT link setting.
The speeds appear higher than the BIOS setting, ie 600 setting appears something around 750mhz in CPU-Z.

When I had my HT freq set @ auto, I couldn't raise the FSB by more than 5 MHz before it started crapping out and not posting! I've now put it down to 400 MHz and have increased the FSB to 210 to give 2.1GHz, I'm gonna have a play around and see how high I can o/c.

The HTT is massively under-saturated. Basically it is a lot higher than it needs to be. If memory serves the most an A64 system can actually use at any one time is 600MHz. Many people when overclocking drop their HT multi [or LDT] to x3 to give them more stability.

If you want a beginners guide then here you go: www.short-media.com/review.php?r=300

It is a long read but explains everything you need to know. It is well written and easy to follow.

The article was written with single core in mind but the theory and practice are identicle for dual core CPUs. Everything you do in the BIOS affects both cores in the same way.
