I know that devices like the FitBit don’t get much loving in here and I appreciate that many people see it as ‘just an expensive pedometer’ and to be fair, that’s what it is but the fact that it’s so well connected is what makes it work for me.

I’ve always been a big guy, I’ve tried the occasional diet but I’ve never been motivated or interested in keeping it up for very long. Just over three months ago, I bought a FitBit One and have been carrying it ever since. I have it linked to the MyFitnessPal app on my smartphone and it synchronises nicely with that. I have my daily calorie allowance from my height and weight and the exercise I do by walking is added to that allowance. The more I walk, the more I burn and my food allowance goes up.

I’ve set a daily goal of walking just under 11,000 steps per day which equates to five miles and the fact that it’s all technology and provides me with live info has given me the motivation to reach this goal. The place I used to work at wasn’t really in a good location for getting out for a walk but now my new job is in Ipswich, I find it really easy to go for a walk each day. I arrive early, walk into the town centre and stride up and down the high street a couple of times, then back to the office which is around two to two and a half miles depending on what time I arrive. At lunchtime, I do the same except I walk a bit longer, adding another two and half to three miles to my daily total. By the time I’m back in the office after lunch, I’ve always walked over five miles and I do it at a decent brisk speed. At weekends, I go to work with my wife and walk home. On a direct path, it’s just around two miles but I take a very roundabout route and I normally walk over four miles on the way home.

My eating habits have changed a little. I used to skip breakfast and have a sarnie at lunchtime along with either some crisps or chocolate then my main meal in the evening, with various snacks throughout the day. I now have some Belvita biscuits for breakfast, sandwiches at lunchtime with a fruit bar and a packet of Quavers or Squares and then my main evening meal. I’ve cut out the snacks but my evening meals haven’t really changed. I’ll have fish and chips, steak and kidney puddings, sausages, burgers etc and once a week I’ll have a pizza. Some days if I fancy something hot, I’ll have a Subway for breakfast or perhaps a McDonalds wrap. Once a week, on a Friday I have a big doorstep four rasher bacon sandwich. The only real difference is that I’m strictly calorie counting. Most days I don’t use my entire allowance and I never go to bed hungry. Since I started, I’ve only been over my allowance once and that was on the day of the local beer festival.

So how am I doing?

I said I’ve had it for just over three months and to be more exact, I’ve been using it for 100 days. In those 100 days, I’ve lost 3st 9lb which is 51lb.

All entirely motivated by this little bit of electronics that’s in my pocket all the time.

So yes, it is expensive for what it is but for me, it does exactly what it’s supposed to do.

Thanks guys, I'm not finding it a struggle to walk the distance each day now, it was at first and when I started it took a couple of weeks to get up to making my goal each day but now I do it with ease and generally get a fair bit extra as well without even thinking about it. For example, the last week I've done an average of just over 6.5 miles each day. My average over the whole 100 days is just under 6 miles/day.

I've not had any sugar cravings at all. I drink my (decaff) coffee black and don't like tea. The only time I ever add sugar to anything is on the top of fresh strawberries.

I know it's going to be difficult to maintain this over the winter but I'm adamant that I'm going to keep it up. I keep a close watch on the hourly forecast from Not-Very-AccuWeather and time my lunch breaks with that. Mind you, that didn't stop me getting utterly soaked this morning when the skies opened while I was walking past Argos. Hey, I'll dry out though!

Time for an update.

I'm now 150 days into my FitBit ownership and in that time I've now lost 5st 2lb which is 72lb or just over 34kg. My total weight loss since May 2012 is 6st 4lb (88lb, 40kg).

I've walked 932 miles since I got the FitBit back in July and I've destroyed a pair of shoes and a pair of trainers doing it.

So are you still finding the fitbit helpful OP?
I've got a name. It's not 'OP' :(

Yes, it's very useful. The fact that it feeds back my exercise into the MyFitnessPal app which takes it into account and recalculates my daily calorie allowance is fantastic.

Take today as an example. My daily allowance is currently 1,470 calories. Half way round my six mile walk, I stopped at Greggs and had a rather yummy steak slice which was 430 calories. My exercise for the day so far has already added 685 calories back into my allowance so along with a couple of other things I've eaten, I've still got 1,589 calories left today.

No before and after body shots. Maybe in the future but not yet because I've not yet reached the final 'after' stage ;)

OK so now I'm up to 200 days since I got the FitBit

My weight loss in that period is just around six stone!

My total weight loss since May 2012 is now 7st 3lb which is 101lb or 45kg.

I missed my walk on a couple of days over Christmas and the New Year (although I did walk on Christmas day) and I spent the best part of a week with a nasty cold when I could barely move, never mind walk but apart from that, I'm still getting in a minimum of five miles per day, normally nearer eight miles!

I don't think the fitbit is the main thing here in this scenario, it's your dedication.

The fitbit is just doing the simple things for you like calorie counting and tracking activity. Both of which I do using food labels and readings on the treadmill, etc.

--snip--
My dedication has come from using the FitBit. I fully accept that it's just doing stuff that I could quite easily do myself but the simple fact is that when I started doing this, it was that little lump of technology in my pocket which was driving me forward.

I'll admit that it's not so important now because if I don't walk during the day, I feel restless and am looking forward to my exercise time.

As an aside, I was at the local hospital on Friday because my daughter was in for minor surgery. Naturally I was a little stressed but I figured 'what the hell' and asked one of the nurses if she could check my blood pressure.

She did so and told me that it was "textbook perfect" and also told me what my resting heart rate is. Not being into fitness or exercise, I had no idea what resting heart rate was all about but she said that my figure of 53 was really good. I've looked into it since and every chart I've seen describes that as 'athlete'. Clearly I'm not an athlete but it's refreshing to know that I'm actually pretty fit now, despite still being overweight. I used to get out of breath after climbing a couple of flights of stairs so this regular walking has had a good effect on my general wellbeing as well as my weight.

Another fifty days have passed so I'm, now up to 250 days.

I'm still walking the same distances and still counting my calories using MyFitnessPal (see my thread here) with adjustments due to exercise from the FitBit.

I'm still losing weight albeit a little slower this period than before. I put this largely down to a long weekend I had away in February that included four (yes, FOUR) full cooked meals per day, two of which were three course. I did a quick calculation on the calories I ate just for breakfast and I reckon it was 1300-1500 each day. I put on about half a stone over those days which of course I had to lose again.

My loss is now 8st 4lb. That's a total of 116lb or just over 52.5kg.

And as of this morning, when I got on the scales, I've finally shifted down from being 'obese' to being 'overweight' according to the NHS BMI charts.

I don't really have a specific weight target but I have a size. I'd like to be able to fit comfortably in the suit I wore for my wedding. I have a rough idea of what I think will be the right weight but it's not a set, specific goal.

tom_e - You're right. For me, BMI is a reasonable method of measurement. I'm not training hard or concentrating on anything other than losing body weight at the moment.

I'm inbetween updates but I thought I'd post a couple of pictures.

The first one is me in July last year.

The second one is me at the end of last month.

To keep my international man-of-mystery reputation, I've added a black bar in an appropriate place :D

Clearly I've still got a belly but that will go as the weight continues to come off.

great successful weight loss, but once you achieve your goal make sure you don't fall into old habits and then watch the pounds pile back on.
It's not a trap I intend to fall in. As I've bought smaller clothes, I've thrown the old ones away. The only large things I have left are my belts which I've made new holes in and they comically now reach round to the centre of my back :)

To be fair, he's done it the right way, lots of exercise, monitoring his food properly, not denying himself anything, just keeping to moderation, it's more of a lifestyle change than a diet, so he has a lot more chance of keeping it off.
Exactly, today I had a bacon roll for breakfast and because it's friday, it's fish and chips night!

Awesome job man, I personally think things like the fitbit are a really good idea if they motivate you to hit your goals and offer you a way of making what you're doing tangible, even if they weight loss isn't that noticeable especially in the beginning, and then fitness does just become a habit thats very hard to break as with anything else.
That's the plan, I've got into the habit of walking and now if I don't my regular exercise in then I'm very restless.

A month further on and you can see what's left of my belly is well on the way. This was taken about half an hour ago just after I'd had steak and kidney pudding, chips and gravy for my tea :)

You should remember that the FitBit dashboard also shows the calories burned just by being alive. At the end of each day, my FitBit dashboard always shows a significant "under" reading.

I let the FitBit feed the figures back to MFP and I always eat some of the calories back. I don't pay specific attention to exactly how many but I just aim to keep that MFP figure in the green at the end of each day. I also use various apps to monitor my walks which feed back into MFP but generally I delete that activity from the cardio feed and rely on the FitBit. It's worked for me so far!

Anyway.

Today is day 300 of my FitBit ownership and although things have again slowed a little, I've dropped fractionally over another stone in the last fifty days since I posted a weight update. I'm now down by 9st 5lb which is 131lb or just under 60kg lost.

Last weekend I ordered a t-shirt from eBay which turned up very quickly but I had to send it back because it was too big. It was a large size and I've exchanged it for a medium and I'm wearing it now. It's a bit tight but not uncomfortable and as I still have a little way to go, I'm happy with it. When I put the large on and it was too big, I had a huge smile on my face as I used to fill XXXL t-shirts!

So I'm very confident that when the next fifty day update rolls around that I'll have reached my size goal and be comfortably in my wedding suit from over twenty years ago. Expect pictures when that happens ;)

Good for you Clark, I hope you get on well with it. If you're also using MyFitnessPal, do a search for the thread on here which I started.

I've set my FitBit goal for 10,800 steps (five miles) and I am to exceed that every day. Whether it's just by mooching around the office, or going for a walk, I don't care.

Having said that, I do go for a walk every day. Take today for example, I arrived at work at 07:40 and went out for a walk around town - I did 5.4 miles in a fraction over 74 minutes so I'm already over my target for the day. I'll go out again at lunchtime and probably add another three miles or so and that's what I typically do most work days. It's a habit I've got into over the last ten months and if I don't get out for my walks, I feel restless.

Nope, no desire whatsoever. I've tried it very briefly a couple of times but I've still got bits that bounce uncomfortably and my knees aren't great. Last year in July I bowled a three game series and my left knee hurt for three months afterwards. It's a shame as I used to bowl twice a week and really enjoyed it.

But I really don't fancy running, I'm happy enough walking (done sixteen miles today at an average speed of just under 4.5 mph) and I clearly don't need to run to get the desired results.

The main issue for me with a fitbit would be that I always end up driving somewhere so having to go back and edit the times that I was driving to ensure I don't get false readings would get old pretty quickly,
The FitBit will add a few steps while driving but not many. My normal drive to work is about 40 minutes along the back roads which are quite uneven in places and it adds less than 50 steps. 50 steps extra over 16,000 is so little as to make no difference.
