This thing is huuuuuuuuuge. Even my A8 is dwarfed by it in every dimention. It is so big, it doesn't actually fit in the parking spaces at work.
It drives well and rides exceptionally smoothly. The inside is sort of like a beefed up C6 A6 but doesn't suffer from many of the ergonomic flaws of that vehicle. Accelleration is pretty poor but then I wasn't expecting it to be quick seeing as it weighs the best part of two and half tonnes and only has 230bhp from it's 3 litre soot-thrower to propel it around.
The suspension and ride height is adjustable from the MMI console much like my A8, but this fella has a lot more options. It can be adjusted between sitting on the deck and standing on top-toes. It is all pretty easy to use but I did manage to get the system stuck in "lift" mode for a while. Not sure how though.
Yes, as is in keeping with all Audi courtesy cars, this one is fitted with a diesel engine which is the usual VAG affair of clattering cold starts and bag of spanners cruising noise. Saying that, the Q7 itself is very quiet and refined which goes quite a way to disguising the fact that an oil-burner sits underneath it's sizable nose. Road noise is an issue however. It's massive 275 section, 20" tyres make a very loud roar. I think this car would be better suited to some higher profile rubber on smaller rims.
The packaging is very good, with 7 seats and lots of nice features inside the cabin. My main gripe with the interior is the lack of an electronic parking brake as features on most Audis these days. Instead, Audi have fitted a foot operated affair with a handle release that emits a loud "clunk" when operated. Also, all the MMI buttons are the other way round to how they are laid out in all other MMI equipped Audis.
This particular example seems to have all the right options such as Audi's superb MMI system with sat-nav, a halfway decent stereo, keyless entry and go, TMC, auto lights and wipers, electric leather seats, electric tailgate, electric steering column, and park radar. The only thing that is conspicuous by it's absence is bluetooth phone connectivity. I would expect this to be standard fit on an exec costing £40,000.
All in all I really like it, but it is just too big to be practical on UK roads. Driving it isn't a problem but fitting it in parking spaces is a real issue. I never thought I'd hear myself say that, considering I drive what most people consider to be a very large car on a daily basis.
