So finally i got a canon 350d, this is my first digital slr

i have spent the last few days trying to get my head around the iso, shutter speed, apiture etc. so much to learn.

id really like to get some good shots of sun rise or sun set, but dont think the kit lense is up to it. or maybe its just me being awful :P

taken a few of a dog that we had around over xmas, and very happy with how they seemed to have turned out. (i will attach one lower down)

can anyone give me any tips for getting a lovely sunset? obviously being down here in north devon there are some fantastic spots to visit :)

i only have the lens that came with the camera which is a 28-90mm

few of my favs from xmas day.

Tosh :D. The kit lens is perfectly capable of those sort of shots (I know cos I had one and took some nice sunrise/set shots with it, on a 350 no less). It is just a matter of getting used to it mate.

Wilkommen, I've been perusing here more and more lately, and there's some absolutely invaluable advice to be had from the more experienced guys.

Started with a 350D myself. It's a more than capable camera to learn how to become a decent photographer.

Just try not to catch the bug otherwise you'll be thousands of pounds out of pocket :p

You'll be suprised exactly with what you can get with a kit lens. It's still miles ahead of any compact camera imo. (Apart from the obvious stuff)

i was trying last night and on manual mode i was getting a white screen. was sure why.... i tried changing shutter speed that didnt change anything.

any criticism or pointers with the above pics??

i get the feeling i am going end up getting the bug, how annoying lol

Learn how to use AV/TV mode. TV mode. Set it to 150/s and the camera will sort the aperture itself. Or vise versa, set the AV (aperture) to F5.6 and the camera will sort the shutter speed out. ISO wise, start at 200 (I think that's the lowest on the 350D? Can't remember) and just turn it up till you get the settings right.

I strongly, strongly advise you read Understanding Exposure. This will teach you LOADS!

ahhh i see. the tv load i get 125 or 160 but i can clearly see the difference in the lighting between setting tv or av and choosing the settings.

ill defo get looking into that book. thanks :P
