i got the golf home today. after an afternoon + evening of working on it, i have not made a lot of progress at all.

when i woke i this morning i was convinced all the usual motor parts shops would be open. unfortunately all i could cobble together without driving too far was engine oil, gearbox oil, injector cleaner, oil filter.

i got home, got it straight on the ramps. i tried to get the sump plug out. two hours later i was still trying. i managed to split one 17mm 6sided heavy duty draper socket. eventually the bolt rounded. it is stuck :S

two hours wasted. the gear box oil only took about 30 mins though, put some millers semi synth in there. not been out so cannot tell you if there is a big difference.

i am hoping to take the car to a national car centre place tommorow for one of those £13 oil changes, including filter etc. they put it on ramps and can get nearly any sump plug out! i will keep there crap oil for a while then put my millers in.

interior is messy, exterior is dirty. i have the wiring layed for the hifi, but there is a fair way to go yet.

oh, and the cambelt is about 6k miles over due lol nice

Get a pair of mole grips and clamp solidly on whats left of the plug - you'll need a new one mind!

Or, file the two sides of it flat and use that to clamp on. And douse it in plusgas/WD40! :D

Sounds like its in a right state for only 140k miles, I thought VW's were super reliable and built like tanks?

the sump plug is stuck on. hardly catatastrophic lol the interior is in shockingly good nick and it pulls like a blinder. could do with new brake fluid and sometimes the dampers can feel a bit bouncy.

seriously. the car (once the timing belt has been done) could go on for thousands of miles, i cannot stress how much life there is in it, but i want it mint and peachy, im like that with cars.

give me a month and ill have it tip top :D ill get some pics up tommorow and youll be shocked at how good it is after 11 years and 146000 miles :D

how difficult was it to change the gearbox oil?
youll need a 17mm allen key, no idea why they use those.

the car was in the air anyway, undid the drain plug, dumped the oil.

filling was a different matter, the filler is on the side of the box.

i cobbled together a bit of hose and a funnel. put the hose into the box, the funnel into the other end of the hose.

put my 2L of oil in.

30 mins tops (with a coffee break). 146000 mile old gbox now changed for some fancy millers stuff. i should be able to outrun everything now

had to drop my brother into town today, that car is a quick revvy little bugger. it is so damn solid, the steering has no slack whatsoever, it feels almost go kart like after the merc.

when exitting small roundabouts in 2nd gear it does start to scrabble/wheelspin gently once the revs get past 5k.

itll be quicker and be even more fun when i get the oil and cambelt done lol

its raining today. i think ill take it to a Nationwide Autocentre to get them to remove the plug then go buy its belts. ill get it home to valet the insides then get it booked for the belt change tommorow.

its a belter, regardless of the fact that it cost less than £1500 including the price of insurance

I'd see if you could get a pair of stillsons (sp?) on the sump plug, or failing that, use a chisel on the flats of the plug. The edge of the chisel should dig in to the plug and the shock from the hammer hitting it might help loosen it. :)

ive got a lot of tools but no welding stuff. im taking it to a nationwide auto centre today, they recon theyll have more luck :D

thing is, ive got my own oil already, id much prefer to stick that in.

ill keep you all updated :D
