p.s ill be putting pics of the finished ioshock case up soon :) and the next project im starting :)

Awesome. How much did it cost?

a lot lol... i say more than my car, but it was around the same price :D

if it wasnt for the discount i got from my supplier I would have been handing over £365 ( retail = £364.99)for it... free delivery though :/ lol

the Kustom brushes are extremly hard to get hold of over here, as they were only meant to be sold in north america. they are slowly becoming availible here though.
people sell them but only one place ahs them in stock, on the shelf.

just about to put it through its paces...

You can pick them up for around £300-350

aye, Iwata are doing discounts til the end of january - good time to buy :)

I had a few gift voucchers and stuff for the place i got it from via father christmas, so the outlay wasnt that great to be honest. I would have bought one anyway... pretty much wanted one since the day i started painting. well worth it, great adition to my iwata collection :D

Here's some more Iwata porn for ya RB:

My Iwata W400 collection which are (from left to right) a 1.3mm basecoat waterbased setup, 1.8mm Primer setup, 1.4mm lacquer setup. Also have a SATAjet RP and an Airgunsa AZ3 that I use depending on what I'm spraying.

Hi2u :D

I'm looking at my full size gun set up at the moment acctually... I'm about to pull the trigger on a devilbiss GTI, until I saw the iwata range...

I don't usualy have a use for decent full size guns, as I don't usualy do my own clears... but since i am now starting to do everything I could do with a nice set of dedicated base, prime and clear guns.

add me to msn fenderrick [at] hotmail.com . . . wouldnt mind knowing about those iwata guns as no one seems to be able to tell me what they are like!

ill get a pic of my collection for ya ;) they have all just been cleaned though... lacking the usual 'character' of my aibrushes, normaly covered with paitn on the outside and clean as a whistle inside lol.

thanks for sharing!

More iwata pr0n
( btw people who dont understand.... the bigger and more sparkly, and the more holes and knobs it has . . the better)

heres what I have...

I have more but never use them.

the HP-CH used to be the workhorse, for mid - detail but the KCM will fill its place now. i used to use my detail hose with it but that is now swapped to the KCM :)
MAC valve is a life saver too :D

the eclipse is one of my favourite brushes, its upgraded to .5 needle so it throws the paint out... great for filling areas fast... I even use it for priming and clearcoating smaller parts too, gives a superb finish.

the Sotar brush is an old one. tend not to use it these days unless i really have to. the needle is stupidly fine @ 0.1mm but is not really suited to the paints I use

the mini jet rip off I use a lot. pretty crap gun, i couldnt aford the real deal sata version at the time but this one does the job for what i use it for :)

What a nice collection you have there RB. The Eclipse is perhaps the most widely recognised airbrush out there.

I've tried many full size guns throughout the time I've been spraying and the Iwata just have a magic all of their own. The biggest plus point is obviously the quality of the atomisation and the evenness of the fan even at large sizes such as 10"+. The paint really lays down well with the new split nozzle designs such as those found on LPH and WB ranges.

Another great strength is that they aren't air hogs yet can still get the atomisation and flow rate right. The LVLP guns such as the LPH400 consume only 270 litres per minute. A SATAjet 3000 which offers a similar quality of finish will require nearly twice that to operate at its best.
I use a 4hp compressor with a 90ltr receiver and it works great for the medium sized pieces I spray. I also have a smaller 50ltr 2hp compressor which is much more portable.

The japs also know how to create a beautifully balanced weight distribution that causes virtually no fatigue even over long spraying periods.

A good gun does most of the work for you, there's no compensating for a peculiarity or flaw in the gun, it just works. The Iwata's have been the most consistent in this regard. I'm sure the airbrushes are the same in this regard.

I don't spray professionally, by that I mean any spraying I do its for my own pleasure and enjoyment. It wasn't always that way though. Some years ago I was a scared off by the whole thing so I tried to get auto shops to spray my stuff but they wouldn't touch it because it was MDF rather than the usual metal work they're used to dealing with. The MDF needs different working practises but the paint systems themselves are the same. In the end I had to teach myself by buying a couple of DVD's and spraying lots of practise pieces.

I must say I have much admiration for your work. I'm a speaker builder and a sprayer but not an artist. I can design, measure and cut but my hands and mind aren't capable enough to create the beauty I saw on your cases. Congrats on those BTW.

I find the whole subject of spraying completely fascinating. Here I'd like to share with you a couple more photo's:

What do you spray with?

The best out there for the detailing and air brush work seems to be the waterbased Autoair.

I use waterbased basecoats but for clears its 2k all the way. I keep toying with the idea of buying a detailing gun and trying some masking techniques on my work - you know chequered flags, shapes and all that sort of stuff. It'd just be basecoat masked over drawn out and then use a scalpel to cut out the details. After this then shoot with some of the transparent base or the sparklescents etc. and clearcoat.

Problem is Autoair have a massive range and I just don't know where the best effects are. I like fairly subtle finishes so I think the transparent base would work well and could be used for blends and fades.

Really have to try this stuff later on in the year.

Any tips you can provide? I'll add you to my MSN tomorrow and we'll have a chat if you don't mind?

Damn, that is some seriously nice work there!

You hit the nail on the head with the iwata airbrushes, they a re just absolutly flawless. i have used, and been through tons of brushes and the iwatas are just the best. consistant, balanced, perfect.

i have a 100lite atlas copco compressor, so i have the power to run big guns. It isnt as poweful as 4hp, as it runs off the mains, so that 3hp isnt it ? ( dont hold me to that )

it runs a full size gun fine, but as i said i dont use them often as other people do my clears.

NO ONE would dare touch my stuff either. clearcoating artwork is a mare as you are not allowed to flat it like you would normal base coat. so you have to clear coat a totaly un even surface where some parts are matt and some shiny, some rough some smooth.

I can clear, but i prefer not to - i dont have the right guns and i prefer to leave the risk to others :) he he

It's time to start though, so please drop me a line, as i would love to talk about the big guns :)

theose loudspeakers look fantastic by the way... i enjoy quality hi-fi ( well the best quality i can afford) so i can really see what you can get out of creating your own loudspeakers. great stuff and flawless paint !
cheers,
Rb

Generally the largest you can run on single phase (240v) is 3hp. After that its 3 phase or diesel/Petrol. If its got a 100ltr receiver and is single phase then I'm betting its a 3hp. You can also get single phase to three phase converters.

NO ONE would dare touch my stuff either. clearcoating artwork is a mare as you are not allowed to flat it like you would normal base coat. so you have to clear coat a totaly un even surface where some parts are matt and some shiny, some rough some smooth.

The waterbased paints are quite good in this regard since each layer doesn't have as thick a build up as the solvent based stuff. I bet you notice the edges of a particular layer are less pronounced with that.

I've a friend(well a friend of a friend actually) who used to do air brush work mainly on motor cycle helmets, chopper tanks etc. She's virtually retired from all that now but I have clearcoated a few of the last pieces made as she doesn't have the equipment or air fed mask to spray 2k clears. She used autoair and occasionally used something called base sealer between every few layers and the last one. This locked all the work in ready for the clears. You have to be careful to build up around 7 good coats so as to allow for the sanding and polishing work to be done without cutting through clear - which would be

I can clear, but i prefer not to - i dont have the right guns and i prefer to leave the risk to others :) he he

Yep its nasty stuff. An airfed mask is essentially for 2k really. I've got my own scare story to tell with that stuff. I take no chances now however.

So please drop me a line

Will do tomorrow.

Thanks. That coming from yourself means a lot.

I am a spray painter by trade myself although i packed it in when i was 31, 2 years ago before it killed me.

I always used a devilbiss and preferred them to be honest but my older cousin who has been spraying for almost 30 years swears by the iwata.
Tried his gun several times when spraying and could not get used to it. It just seemed to chuck the paint out and even though the guns may look the same they definitely felt and sprayed different imo.
I do wish i had the room or a garage though myself to spray. Working for insurance companies and to there ridiculous timescales you never got the opportunity to create or at least admire the job you done which is something i do enjoy.
The cases you have created RB are truly incredible and the above work shinOBIWAN look stunning.

R B Customs..youve had these for a few days and havnt painted us any cases yet? get to work!

- Pea0n

I'm working on a couple of things at the moment mate !

I'm sure when I'm finished one of my projects i will be the supreme 'legend of rock' ( there's a big hint ;) )

Ok I know this is an old post i am reviving but i really do need to speak to an airbrush expert!! Have tried emailing R B Customs but have had no response and Shinobiwan hasn't got his trust configured!!! If either of you look at this please email me on my trust email asap. Also any other person that is familiar with Iwata airbrushes and compressors I would appreciate talking to you to.

Thanks.
