Ok, so i got addicted to photography thanks to a DSLR, one click hooked for life.

anyway i would like to do some sports photography, still new to cameras i've been researching for months but really need some good advice.

ill probably be shooting motor sport, a lot of events coming up and i would like to take some nice pictures. I currently know a bit about canon and nothing about nikon so please suggest something i might have missed.

i have been currently looking at the canon 600d 60d would the 60d be worth the extra? for a advanced beginner?

with:
canon 70-200mm f4 L
canon 70-200mm f4 L IS
canon 70-200mm 2.8 L
sigma 70-200 EX OS USM
sigma 70-200 EX USM

my question is which of these would suit taking fast sports photography. ill probably spend a max of 1000pounds on a lens and about 700-800pounds on a body. if the 2.8 IS lenses are totally ground breaking ill probably save up abit more.

i looked at Nikon, and couldn't find a 70-200 apart from the sigma ones or the expensive Nikon 2.8 VR

but i would consider a nikon spec if anyone can recommend a lens to my needs
thanks for the help.

never considered second hand ones, dont know what im looking at what im looking for, and i dont ask the right questions, 1k is a lot for something unless you know what your looking for.

I don't very often say this as I'm not a fan of it personally, but a 7D is probably best suited crop body for sport, tbh though a 60D should do just fine and imo it is worth the extra premium over the 600D for the buffer depth alone.

A D7000 is a great camera to consider if you plan to shoot other things also, and would easily choose it over the 60D for the better auto focus, image quality and 'pro-like' features, but if the camera is solely for sports the 7D is still the champ of the crop sensor camera's.

Personally I'd be looking for a used 1Dsomething, if your choosing Canon's 18mp crop sensor due to the high megapixel count, then don't as plenty of lower megapixel sensors will actually get you better image quality (especially if the sensor is larger). Even large differences in mega-pixel count doesn't make as much difference as you might think, as resolution is linear. For instance a 24 mp sensor will only produce an image that's 40% larger than a 12 mp sensor. Also as you increase megapixel count you get diminishing returns for a number of reasons, so this further reduces any real advantage.

I'd consider looking into the following.
1D Mark II
1D Mark III
1Ds Mark II

For lenses, maybe consider a used Canon 70-200 also?

If you don't know what things to watch out for, then I'm sure folks here can help you out in your buying decision.

if your getting big lenses like that I wouldnt put it on anything less than a 60D body simply because of weight balance - anything higher than a 60D is a bonus.

The canon 70-200mm 2.8 L is a great lens but comes at a cost....if your shooting motorsport a lot then this would be a better choice than the cheaper f4 versions imo due to better stopping and being able to reduce shutter speed right down whilst still holding it and letting the IS kick in.

I'd definitely skip the XXXD and XXD bodies and go for the 7D. Weather sealed, 19 cross type AF points, 8 frames per second... it's a no-brainer in my opinion.

^^^
All that is true except it's not really adequately weather sealed to be classed 'weather sealed' imo. (let's in water through the back to easily)

thanks a lot for the assist, ill go for a 7d now i just need to find a second hand lens, or i can get the 70-200 2.8 non IS, or is it a waste of time?

As your photographing moving subjects the IS won't be crucial, but it does come with weather sealing.

Also as your now looking at a 7D budget, a used 1Dsii would be a better buy imo, especially if you care much about image quality or if you will likely use the camera for other purposes as well. Although it doesn't have quite the FPS of the 7D and is obviously more bulky.

Imo the choice is kind of like choosing between a new Boxter or a used 911 Turbo that's a few years old. Both options have pro's & con's, but I'd choose the better car, rather than the one in new condition + warranty.

Edit:

I think Rojin has or had both bodies, so I'm sure if he see's this thread he'l be able to give the pro's and con's with either choice of body.

right, if i can bag a 1d mark 2 with 50,000 shutter shots is that a good buy? or recommended less?

also digital rev have the is2 70-200 f2.8 for 1600pounds, is that wise to get it from them since its quite a saving any idea of where i can find second hand lenses? or is the famous auction site the best place
thanks for your help

50K isn't that much on a 1ds as it's rated for 200K. A new 7D is rated at 150K so it would on average and in theory have the same shutter life remaining.

Edit:
Sorry, do you mean 1Dii or 1Dsii?

Both apparently share the same shutter rating, have you got a link to the camera your looking at btw?

Have you considered the 1D markIII?

hello again i know i am a pain, right about to drop some money on either the canon 70-200 f2.8 or the cheeper sigma one.

Now i am looking to take motorsport with this lens, would i be satisfied with the sigma? should save quite a lot, or should i keep saving and aim for a second hand 70-200 canon.

also, is OS and IS really worth double its price tag? thanks again.

OS and is are worth it if you're shooting static shots in low light. although the 2 mode is on the canons can help with panning.

As for the whole sigma vs canon issue, some will say they've read/ heard its soft. Personally no issues here with the 2 copies we have.
