Got SSD - really that much better for gaming?

You know, I am really thinking about returning dive under dsr.

Tried (briefly) Star Trek Online and Oblivion last night.

Though STO would be a good test because that gmae has so many loads. The loads were fairly fast, but not so much fast that I went "oooooh, wow".

Same with Oblivion, which I tried off both mechanical and the SSD. SSD didn't make THAT much diff.

So for first time in a while I am having serious buyers remorse.

People have been going on about these things like they are the second coming for some time now, and honestly thought this was going to make everything almost instant, but far from.

There is still the temptation to stick it in laptop, but is half the price of laptop itself, which just seems wrong in my mind.

Considering sending back and maybe getting some momentus xt's - could get two for price of this single ssd and have a nice trade off in speed and space.
Mate stay away from those Momentus XT's plenty of problems with hard lockups on those right now !! SSD's only really boost OS & certain apps/games its all down to the file size really. Small files see the biggest boost but as I said earlier large files see no difference as the SSD is not really designed for those & most PC games contain large data files

SSD=The Emperor's New Clothes  in benchmarks they are stunning but real world is less than stunning apart from OS boot times & some apps.

As said above, It all depends on what you are doing. If you are doing stuff that isn't storage subsystem bottlenecked (i.e. most games) then of course it's not going to make much difference.
It's like someone griping that his GTX 580 hasn't made any difference at all in Excel :D

Those of us who know why we wanted an SSD are very happy with our purchases.

I know why I wanted it - because everything I read indicated SSD's are the Holy Grail of PC performance.

Problem is, things that weren't almost instant before, are still not almost instant.

Pretty much every time I have bought hardware in the past, I got what I expected. Jsut not with this.

They are the holy grail, in storage limited situations. Many game loads are not especially storage limited, You can see this if you have the Win7 Resource monitor open on a second screen, or in always on top mode. Sometimes loads are CPU bottlenecked and thus you might see more improvement by upgrading your CPU.

Buying SSD space to use on games is a luxury and the value provided is subjective to your disposable income.
