I dunno about these days, but 10 years ago when I went to uni you could get a grant of £3k for a computer if you were disabled and had a good case for it. This would explain in part why people MUST spend that much money on a computer, i.e. they don't gain anything by spending less. So in those days you would be getting a dual p2-400 with v2 12meg SLI, 256meg RAM and SCSI HDs.
Anyway, personally I'd go for the following:
-Yorkfield CPU ~£200
-Posh cooler ~£30
-Posh mobo (not too well up on them these days) ~£200
-2*2GB of fast DDR2 (PC8000 or better) ~£100
-2x 3870x2 in crossfire (drivers pending... if not then consider 2*8800gtx) ~£550
-2x 150gig Raptors in RAID0 ~£250
-1TB drive for storage ~£140
-Quality 850W+ PSU ~£100
-Logitech G15 ~£50
-Highend mouse of choice ~£50
-Blueray burner ~£150
-X-Fi Fatal1ty ~£100
-Quality case of choice ~£100
-24" Monitor ~£300
-Sennheiser headphones ~£100
This would leave you with around £100 to pay for extras like gamepad, delivery, and a bit of leeway to adjust bits e.g. Monitor as you see fit.

id deffo go x48 or x38 if possible and dd3 i think with quad yorkfield.
My mate did a while back and went alienware and regretted it!!! Stupid money just for the tower (4K
....tri sli ultras) Its just back from them after major overheating and bsod problems....he wouldnt take my advice before anyone says 
Easy - spend £1000 on normal persons pc (ie what most of us would spend) and then shove in a quadro fx5500/5600 as they retail around £1500 that should easily hit 2.5k although for games it will be no better than an 8800 range card, cad on the otherhand will fly
