Hi

I use a garmin sat nav for bike touring and for the last 5 years GPS visualizer has been brilliant at converting a Google maps url into a gpx file which is then copied onto the garmin device and works wonderfully.

I'm taking the gf on her first bike tour today (just a 50 mile one night mini tour) and to my horror I can no longer convert the files!

I get an error saying: "due to Google reducing their quota you now need an API key to proceed, enter API key below".

I've done some googling and created a Google console account but quickly lost my depth, I really haven't a clue how to get this API key. I'll pay for it if need be.

Here's the site I use:

http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input?convert_format=gpx

I tried an alternative convertor site but it too has been struck by this quota issue.

Please can someone help me get an API key?

I looked into this for my car's satnav as its routes functionality is primitive. There was an alternative that involved creating a route in Google my maps then exporting that file, but I can't currently remember the details...

Edit - sounds like you use my maps to create a kml file then convert that to gpx using GPS visualiser.

I would imagine it's the website using google's APIs that needs to obtain the API key. You could try contacting the owners of that site to see if they are aware.

Ridewithgps creates GPX files. I use it for cycling most weekends
