Basically i graduated in 2006 with a 2.2 in Sports and Exercise Science. I've just taken a year out, worked full time but also travelled a bit, and now i feel is the time to get my future in gear.

I am now debating whether to head into further education - possibly the nutrition field, although cost could be a problem as i have no idea where to head for funding (bursaries?) or go into big wide world of work. Anyone done anything nutrition related, or health related with funding from bursaries?

The frustrating thing for me, is that my degree is so generalised, whilst in covers many areas, it only covers a small section of each topic, which means when applying for jobs, employers will favour stand alone degrees in a topic (e.g. nutrition was only one elective in my degree, so this won't stand a chance competing against someone with a stand alone degree in nutrition.

I do feel though that now is the time to start earning some money and get myself on the property ladder.

Does anyone have any advice (i have visited careers advisors but i've given them more advice than they've given me) into where i should start looking for vacancies? (i've looked into prospects - just obtained the prospectus for last year but i'm told it's september till the 2007/2008 one is released) Are there any companies/sites that are especially worth a look. I am open to any type of work really.....however, what i would say is avoiding any type of sales career is a preference.

Cheers, Craig

having a 2.2 might be an problem

look into getting a job that will pay for study outside of hours or day release etc - try some smaller practices where you could do a bit og general work

look into bank professional loans too

work experience is crucial - voluntary?

doctorjob.com is another grad job site

Have you thought about joining the army?

Thanks for the link mate.

To be honest mate i have yeh, and the RAF, but decided that they weren't for me in the end. I applied for a PTI type position in the RAF but didn't succeed with my application...

To be honest mate, having looked through the prospects prospectus there is still a hell of a lot of employers that offer a 'minimum 2.2 qualification' so it's not the end of the world, it makes life more difficult. I do see your point though 100%.

The way i'm starting to look at things is that i can either spend the next 2 - 4 years in post grad study (however this will only happen with a bursary of funding of some sort as i'm already £6000 in debt with my under grad loan)

Or....i could find a position with a good training structure and be in a fantastic position salary wise come 4 years time. I think ideally what i want is training on the job, in a position which ideally will accept any degree.

The careers advisor i saw on friday told me to:

quit my current job - crappy min wage with no prospects (just to pay the bills basically whilst i look for a grad position.)

then get myself some work experience (nutritionist) (which i can easily arrange - got some good contacts) this will help me decide whether the field is for me...

apply for post grad study with the prospect of getting a professional qualification only - such as a nutritionist/dietician, not just do a masters for the sake of it.

or if i don't want to do post grad study....potentially get firing off my c.v to as many firms as possible, and obtain the new 2007/2008 prospects guide and get myself in somewhere between the sept-jan window.

Cheers for the replies so far!

Never give up with the 2.2, they will look at you anyway even if they say 1st as a min. Its just a guide. so go along and be confident in what you know and you will be fine!

Cheers mate, to be fair it has put me off applying for some jobs if they have 2.1 or international equivalent as a requirement, but I think i'll just chance it and throw a few applications in....

Having a 2.1, but really had a 2.2

they check (they'll at least check by asking your tutor, which you'll usually have down as a reference)

what about using just work references , if youve got them

i wouldnt do it, but i bet it goes on a lot

Never lie about your degree! you will get asked to show it when you get a job. Well the one you really like for sure! I had to show mine and its just not worth it. They will still accept your qualification. But they catch you lying, game over.

What matters most is how you present yourself in interview.
