I am finishing my Computer Science BSc degree from Warwick Uni next Summer, and am expected to get a 2:2 or a 2:1 if I really push it.

I need to start applying for graudate positions as soon as possible, so I was hoping people could recommend me companies which has positions in London or Coventry.

I am looking to start off with support, system management or networking.

Any help will be greatly appreciated :)

Make sure you get that 2:1. It makes quite a big difference with the graduate programmes, providing you get over the UCAS points hurdle.

You will struggle to get into these firms with a 2:2. Accenture and LogicaCMG have a program which you can apply to with a 2.2, but they're not that great compared to the proper one.

Pretty much every large company has a graduate scheme or program or at least some acceptance of graduates.

You WILL need a 2:1. Try all the banks, main IT vendors. Expect heavy competition.

GlaxoSmithkline
BSKYB
EMC

etc

the standard blueprint for conventional grad schemes is minimum 300 uncas points, 2.1, extra activities and position of responsibility and some vacation experience - be it temp work, internships, shadowing etc

there are other ways in, although less planned and reliable; getting a 2.2 would make things less structured but still possible.

the fact the degree is from warwick will stand you in a good position - recruiters are so uni biased!

Your doing business studies right fox? What did you do for your placement and was it worthwhile?

Got to start applying when I go back but not sure whether to bother or not.

Yea I am - I started my placement last month, working in Finance. Enjoying it so far, hope it turns out to be worthwhile :)

Thats another thing I was wondering actually. Ive chosen finance modules for my second year, but was unsure as to whether or not doing a Business Studies course with finance modules, would give me a comprehensive enough understanding to go for a placement in finace, or whether somebody doing a degree more focused on Finance and accounting, would have more knowledge to go into the workplace and therefore get the placement over me?

What kind of company is it if you dont mind me askin?

:)

Cheers for the tips :)

I need 73% in my final year to get a 2:1 and 57% to get a 2:2 - I really screwed up the first two years :( :o

I worked at Novell last Summer, so I do have some work experience.

I am also in the Exec for Hindu Society and Student Industrial Society so hopefully that helps. I have done my DoE up to Silver.

I wouldn't worry too much about 2.1 vs 2.2. My degree was not in your field, but I know a lot of people who have walked into good jobs with a 2.2 (I got a Masters with distinction btw :) ) . On your application form put 'expected 2.1' so you don't get stopped going to the next stage by a minimum wage jobsworth, but as long as you perform well at assessment centre they will probably still give you the job with a 2.2.

You realise that the weighting on the years isn't equal, yea? It's something like the 2nd year counts for 30% and the final year 70%..

not necessarily true to be honest - the top recruiters are so overwhelmed by applications and have data rsearch checks that you pretty much need the 2.1 - it may be a condition on your pre contract. sure you can find contrary examples here and there but all in all you need it. there have been cases on people with thirds getting into top grad schemes all because they have excellent exp and were predicted that 2.1! don't hedge your bets on it being you though!

if you have a 2.2 though you can still prosper; many jobs out there just less of a planned path. it all depends on the prestige of the type of job you go for really.

I can echo what has been said about experience being important, and that also a 2:1 will make things much easier than a 2:2.

Just over a week til I start with Accenture (again... I spent a year there doing an internship).
