An article published in Feb 2005 by the Times said the average graduate salary was £22,000/ 23,000. I think I read something last month in the Times that said it is now about £23,000ish. This seems awfully high to me, and I don't know anyone (apart from myself) who is a graduate (or recent graduate) that started on over £22,000. What are other people's views of this? does this sound about right?

are they just talking about graduates within 2 years of graduationg?

I would have guessed at 19k if so.

You have to factor in all of the graduates.

Most ppl who graduate from doing a medicine course are on average higher than 30k, there are probably a couple thousand graduating per year.

Then you get a few thousand ppl who make it into banking who earn 30k+, from a top tier bank its 40k+ even know a few who started on 60k.

All of this skews the averages.

ok um maybe on second thoughts it's not a few thousand, but definately over a thousand in each catergory :P.

I wouldn't worry about averages and this or that. I think it is more important to get in to something you like doing and just work hard and have a fun life.

I'm just about to graduate, and I haven't really been looking at jobs but the few presentations I have been to all stipulated a pay of 22-24K, most of my friends have jobs lined up starting at 23-25K with some bonuses. This is for Edinburgh, in London I would expect a lot more.

I have a times graduate supplement for last year which states the average starting salary as soemthing like 21K, but for investment banks its 33-35K. Can well beleive that, someone I know is starting 30K in edinburgh!

I started as a graduate autumn 2003 on £20.5k which is slightly above average for back then. Remember graduates in London get bigger figures just as a result of the higher living expenses.

Not only does the type of graduate but the location of employment has an effect as well.

Knowing what myself and friends of mine got having graduated and moved to London for work, that average (as an average) looks OK to me.

For those going into their fields - yes.

I may add that starting on £30k plus does not teach you an awful lot about money. I started all those years ago on £7.5k a year, and believe me it was a struggle. But to be where I am now, I have a lot more respect for the money I earn.

North West IT graduates appear to be £19-21k as far as I know these days.

I haven't graduated yet (finalist), but have a job offer which I have accepted.

32k plus 10k starting bonus.

From the few people I can think of who I know that have graduated recently, in the region of 20k would seem to be about the average (obviously I am talking of a very small sample size!)

Sounds about right to me. I would say the people from top universities add significant skew to the distribution (if its the mean).

Sounds about right to me, certainly for Engineering Jobs, and I've seen a few for £24,000+, though most are well above £22,000 I think, though I've seen some as little as £18-20,000.

I would love to walk into a £22k job when I graduate... It seems like a pretty good salery, especially if you chose to live with your parents for a while after graduation...

Nick I graduated from Imp last year, I think the only reason they are on top is because they have a high number of medical graduates compared to other graduates who will earn 30k+ when they leave.

The average I read for Imp graduates is 24k, which I think a proper average from looking at friends would be 22/23k which I think is still decent.

It does depend on me pulling things together and getting a 2:1, but I've gained a place on a grad scheme that pays £25k.
